Smart Parking- An IoT Solution
A quick peek into the future
Everything will be co-ordinated and frictionlessInfrastructures and devices will be designed and optimized for preferred public outcomes
You’ve seen these pictures for 20 years now
Technology has matured to make parts of this a reality

• Parking is one of the biggest complaints and issue for cities
• Parking is one of the largest source of revenues for cities
• Parking is directly tied to retail traffic and tax revenue
Today’s Situation
-------------------
-------------------• Increase in revenue
from taxes, citations and turnover
• Improve the traffic flow in the city.
• Improved quality of life for citizens
Result• Embed M2M enabled
devices in parking meters and structures
• Analyze Real-time data available to any device
• Provide real time parking availability
Solution
Smart Parking ConceptMake the city more intuitive
Storyboarding a user flow
Use Case
Curtis needs to go to a meeting at the Bank of America building in downtown SFO. He enters that address
When he is about 2 miles away from the building, he gets a list of parking options and the prices at each. He picks a lot and a spot and drives there. And he pre-pays for a time slot using his Smartphone
He gets prompted to extend her time if his meeting is running longer than expected.
When he is done, the Smartphone reminds him where he is parkedPayments are seamless and automatic
Curtis scans his Smartphone (or watch) to exit the lot
The goals of a PoC
PoC Goals
+ Technology Demonstration• (must have) Parking sensors and infrastructure• (low priority) Entry/exit scanners (barcode or QR code)
+ In-building navigation• Navigate to open spot• (must have) text view of open spot
+ Dynamic Pricing
+ Payments• (nice to have) Seamless payments• (must have) User initiated payments
Personas to consider
1. User (consumer/driver)2. Parking Enforcement Agent3. City commissioners (and other data analysts + consumers)4. Device install and maintenance crews5. IT and Network infrastructure install (physical)6. Solution monitoring (IT)
PoC: An analysis of needs - User
Relevance• I drive to a place, not a parking
garage. Should be seamless• Find cheap parking within
walking distance to my destination
• Avoid getting tickets
Payment• Easy to pay• Should not need to enter my
credit card info all the time• Work with phones I use• Work with wearable I use
Usability• Minimal interactions• Should not need to whip
out phone if I don’t need to
PoC: An analysis of needs - BusinessHardware: • Easy to install in new
buildings• Easy to install in existing
buildings• Easy to install outdoor• Easy to install for street
parking• Durable• Cost efficient installation• Theft proof/ Theft deterrence• Easy to maintain • Easy to support
IT infrastructure• Easy to setup and monitor• Remote supportability
Vendor• Reliability + Supportability• Inventory
PoC: An analysis of needs – City / CountyParking Enforcement• Easy to train officers• Easy to spot offenders• Easy to print parking tickets
Revenue• Maximize revenue
Devices• Deploy on ruggedized, multi-
purpose mobile devices
App Mockups

Increase Real time data
to track parking patterns
Analyze
High Chance
Medium ChanceLow Chance
#1: Lookup parking options near your destination.
And, drive to lot
#2: Check inventory and pricing
#3: Park. Pre-pay to lock-in price.
No more parking receipts.Use QR code to exit
#4: Get notified to extend. Or finish and exit
Life simplified!
#5: Post-pay though app* or at kiosk/ attendant
