SlimPulse servicesThe retrievable SlimPulse* third-generationslim measurements while drilling tool provides cost-effective solutions in high-efficiency drilling environments. It wasdesigned for reliability and efficiency in real-time directional performance. SlimPulsecomponents use the same reliable andproven technology developed for the exist-ing PowerPulse* MWD telemetry systemand IMPulse* integrated MWD platform.

Using servo technology for mud pulsetelemetry, the SlimPulse tool providesdirection, inclination, toolface and gammaray measurements in real time. Servo tech-nology benefits include a fast data rate,strong signal and superior antijammingcapabilities for reliable data transmissionin difficult drilling conditions. Continuousdirection and inclination measurementsare made while drilling to facilitate trajec-tory control and reduce stationary surveymeasurements. Telemetry data automaticallyswitches between a “sliding frame” and a“rotating frame” to optimize update ratesfor improved trajectory control.

The tool is operable in a wide variety ofenvironments and fits in collar sizes from

21⁄2 to 91⁄2 in. Flowrate operating range variesfrom 35 to 1200 gal/min. The entire tool isfully retrievable and replaceable, whichsaves rig time by eliminating pipe trips fordirectional equipment.

SlimPulse tools can be upgraded to operate in temperatures as great as 350°F[177°C]; the designers capitalized on experi-ence gained on previous generation tools operating 15,000 hr in temperatures above300°F [149°C].

The system can be combined with theARC475* 43⁄4-in. drill collar resistivity tool,the AIM* At-Bit Inclination Measurementtool, the APWD* Annular Pressure WhileDrilling service and the PowerDrive* rotarysteerable system. Combining SlimPulseand AIM services provides precision trajec-tory control in hole sizes as small as 57⁄8 in.and inclination data within 1 ft of the bitwhile maintaining the retrievability of theSlimPulse MWD system. This informationis transmitted via electromagnetic telemetryto an integrated receiver sub positionedabove the downhole motor. The integratedreceiver sub contains an optional pressuresensor to monitor equivalent circulatingdensities to enhance the drilling process.
