SHOULD I BLOCK ACCESS TO SOCIAL MEDIA WEBSITES IN MY WORKPLACE?

WHAT’S THIS ABOUT??

It may not very often be the case, but perhaps it happens more often that most employers realise; many employees can spend a hefty chunk of their paid time during a working day to check their own social media accounts. It is estimated that a small, but considerable percentage of all employees can spend up to 2 hours each day on social media instead of doing productive work.

TOP TIPS FOR SECURING YOUR IT INFRASTRUCTURE:WHAT ARE EMPLOYERS DOING?• It can be really important and exceedingly beneficial to have a

Social Media Policy put into place. As social media grows, and is growing, more and more people are using it to document every inch of their lifestyles, including their work-life, and many employees to date have been fired due to overly detailed or detrimental social media posts.

• This may even be going so far as to allow employers access to employees’ social media profiles to monitor what they are posting. Many would see this as a large invasion of privacy and that this could, in fact, seriously bring mutual trust and working relationships into question.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?• Social media can reveal a lot about a person. Their likes, dislikes, photos,

holidays, friends. So, in that sense, it can be highly beneficial. Additionally, the frequent usage of personal social media accounts can actually lend a lot more understanding when using them in a business capacity.

• However, surely the line should be drawn at unproductive hours on Facebook reading Buzzfeed articles at will, or whenever an employer walks past a PC and the most recently opened Internet tab is hastily closed.

Perhaps don’t eradicate social media from the workplace entirely, but create a clear, concise and specific plan and maybe even a filtering system to ensure that what social media is used is appropriate and an effective use of time.
