Term 4 – Week 10 Issue 14: 19 September 2018
Principal’s Report
Principal’s Report Over the past term, we have enjoyed many highlights that have provided a variety of exciting learning
experiences for our students.
It was lovely to see so many families attend the Grade 2 Family Morning on Tuesday. The various Fathers’
Day celebrations also brought a large number of our community into the school. The swimming program,
over the past two weeks, has been a great success. It was especially pleasing to see so many parents at the
pool watching their child having fun and learning how to be safe in the water.
On Friday, we will be having our annual Footy Colours Day. Donations from the day will help to support
cancer research. I am sure the school will be a spectrum of colour and excitement as the students dress up
in their footy team’s colours.
Next term there are a number of important events. We are looking forward to the Celebration of Learning on the 23rd of October. We are also looking forward to the Grade 6 Graduation Day on the 19th of December. The Foundation Orientation Program will take place in November of next term. Please ensure that any children who will be starting school in 2019 are enrolled as soon as possible. I hope you all enjoy the opportunity to spend time together as a family over the two-week holiday break. Wishing you all a relaxing and safe holiday!

Dandenong South PS has a SunSmart policy to reduce UV damage to those in their care.
Sun protection is recommended whenever UV levels are three or higher. It is important we continue wearing
hats to ensure everyone is well protected.
Please discuss sun protection with your children so they understand the reasoning behind it. There is
information available on this website: http://www.sunsmart.com.au/
MUSIC NEWS
In Week 8, the kindergarten children came to visit grades FC/D & 1B/C. They rotated through eight different
activities such as playing with instruments, puppets and ribbons. We finished with a game of musical hoops.
Everyone had a fun time!
In Week 9, everyone did some listening, drawing and talking. This is a ‘think, pair, share’ type of activity for music
where students listen and draw about what they hear and finally talk with each other about what they heard. Here
are some students sharing their thoughts, followed by a few of their responses to the Beatles’ – ‘Yellow Submarine’
and Mozart’s ‘Toy Symphony’.
Overall it was surprising to find that most students liked the Mozart’s ‘Toy Symphony’ (by Leopold Mozart who was
the father of well known Amadeus Mozart) which was written approximately 300 years ago!
Grades 3/4 C & D are working on their ‘Musestory’ for our ACO musician Peter. When the ACO visit us in Term 4,
they will play some of the student’s stories.

IMAGINE-The State-Wide Art Exhibition
Venue: The Meat Market
When: 1st September 2018
Recently, the young artists’ of DSPS had the wonderful opportunity to show-case their
talent by having their artwork selected for display at the State-Wide Art Exhibition.
The artwork was available for auction at the exhibition to raise funds for the less
fortunate children in Cambodia. The students enjoyed being involved in creating artwork
for such a noble cause.
Here are some pictures of their artwork we would like to share with you.

On Wednesday the 5th of September, Dandenong South PS competed at the Dandenong District Athletics
Competition. We sent a team of fifty-nine students. All our students did extremely well and our school finished
second on the overall tally. For some, it was the first time they had ever competed at an official athletics

How much is too much
Balancing Time Online: Information for Parents
With school holidays soon approaching, it is important to maintain a balance between children’s screen time versus time spent
on other activities. Screen time is the time you spend each day using devices with screens, like TVs, video consoles, smartphones
and tablets. There are benefits and risks to using these devices, so a healthy family lifestyle includes limits on daily screen time.
Here is some guiding information from the Office of the eSafety Commissioner in Australia:
How much is too much time online?
There is no magic guideline for the ‘right’ amount of time for children to spend online. This is a matter for you to decide—but
there are guidelines that can help you in addition to factoring in the age of your kids, their maturity level and your family dynamics.
Australian Guidelines *
Your child’s age Recommended screen time
Under 2 years Zero. Babies and toddlers should not watch any television or other electronic media (DVDs, computers and electronic games).
2 to 5 years Less than one hour per day. Limit their time sitting and watching TV or using other electronic media to less than one hour per day.
5 to 17 years Less than two hours per day. Limit their use of electronic media for entertainment (i.e. TV, computers and seated electronic games) to no more than two hours per day.
*These guidelines are for entertainment purposes only and do not include screen time for educational purposes.
What about screen time for educational purposes? The Internet is a great tool for educational support and some of the time that your child will spend online will be for this purpose. It is crucial that you help your children strike the right balance between online time for education and online time for entertainment.
How can I tell if my child is online too much? If your child’s online activity appears to be having a negative impact on their
personal wellbeing or physical behaviour (or on your family), then consider discussing expectations and time limits. Some of
these noticeable changes that can indicate excessive internet use include:
online activities interfering with general health and wellbeing
obsession with particular websites or games
anger when being asked to take a break from online activity
appearing anxious or irritable when away from the computer
spending increasing amounts of time online
a declined interest in social activities like meeting friends or playing sport
excessive tiredness
decline in academic performance and failing to complete schoolwork
seemingly isolated or withdrawn
reduced personal hygiene
negative changes in their behaviour
ongoing headaches, eye strain and sleep disturbance.
How can I help my kids strike the right balance? Health experts recommend limiting screen time because of risks linked to chronic
disease, obesity, sleeping issues, poor academic performance and reduced face-to-face social contact. But screen time in
moderation can provide many benefits including enhanced learning experiences, creativity, social interaction, entertainment,
support in literacy and numeracy skills and improvement in motor skills. So striking a balance between social activities that
include active time away from screens is incredibly important.
