Moët & Chandon and DNA Imagery put on a fashion show

event that exuded elegance and luxury. This glamorous affair lured a young ‘it’ crowd to The Coral Casino for one of the most exclusive parties of the year! VIP passes and champagne bottles in hand, Santa Barbara Life & Style mingled with the who’s who of Santa Barbara, as well as the models and event creators backstage. While guests began to arrive on the red carpet, we were invited backstage to be the first to see the stunning Jessica Barkley gowns. Backstage was a beautiful mess of Jimmy Choo’s, makeup, and models in floor-length gowns.

After admiring the glittering Gauthier necklaces, we chatted

with Vera and Corinna, the creators of the event. Corinna explained that the purpose of the event was not only to get people excited about the main event on March 9th, but to enjoy a fashionable night with the people DNA Imagery has worked with.

And a fashionable night it was! As the clock struck 10 everyone gathered around to watch as the models walked down the red carpeted runway. The show

started with chic ensembles from

Intermix and finished with one of a kind Jessica Barkley gowns. Looking for a dress to wear to The Oscars? Jessica Barkley has you covered. Extravagant jewelry by Gauthier completed each outfit along with music by DJs Calvin Riley, John Hogg, and Arod to enhance the the fashion show.

Leah Larson and Constance Rishwain

What are you wearing today?

Constance Rishwain, President, UGG Australia: “We are wearing Italian Uggs!” Are we seeing anything fun coming out for 2014?

Constance Rishwain: “The Ugg spring line is all about color expression.”

What kind of colors will we be seeing?

Leah Larson: “It’s all inspiredfrom Pop Art. It’s the color that inspires you. It gives you the opportunity to express yourself. We really have a color for everybody—very ELECTRIC! Saturated! Fun, fun colors! And then Fall gets even better!” What about guy’s shoes?

Leah Larson: “Absolutely! We’ve got color for men too!”

Thomas Allen Harris: Director of Through a Lens Darkly

Q: How did you get into photography?

Thomas Allen Harris: “I got into photography through my grandfather. He was a photographer and all the men in the family were expected to be photographers. Photography was an activist tool because at the time of segregation, African Americans were depicted as something other than human. It became a legacy of slavery and so when they stepped into the photographic studios as early as 1840-1850 they were saying to themselves and portraying in the image that ‘I am valuable, I am a human being, I am a family member’ and that might be something very different from the way they were depicted outside. But those two legacies are legacies that I’ve inherited as a man, as an African American man, as an American, as an artist. The film [Through A Lens Darkly] actually talks about how these two legacies have been at war in this country since the invention of photography.”

Q: What can we expect you to be doing in the future?

Thomas Allen Harris: “This is part of a trans media project. It’s part of a One World One Family trans media project, where we are inviting everyone to be part of our family album. I think too often Americans have been either ‘you’re this’ or ‘you’re that’ or ‘you’re with that group’ and we don’t see the interconnectedness of ourselves. What the film shows is that we are connected both genetically and culturally. I think that’s what the young next generation inherits—especially the ideas around urbanity and hip hop culture. But we need to understand where we come from. This is also the last generation that has a family photographic album. I have one, but mine is now on my phone! So what does that mean for the next generation? So that’s what the film is doing, that’s what the trans media project is doing. I’m also working on some narrative projects as well.”

It’s easy to see that there is no shortage of wine in the Santa

Barbara County. It’s a hard job for the SBL&S team (except for our Editor, of course) to taste from these different vineyards and choose our favorite ones (kidding, this job rocks). The winery that is on the top of our lists is Summerland Winery. Not only has the wine won dozens of awards, but it is also sought after by celebrities and the top hotels in the world.

Bilo: “It was a mistake. My dream was to build a dude ranch up in Cuyama Valley. I had just moved from Los Angeles to this ranch that was built in the 50’s, a true dude ranch with a saloon, it had big boulders, brick floors, and the kitchen was built around a train cart. I wanted guests to stay in little cabins and ride up the mesa with me into the wilderness. But it is very difficult to get permits in Santa Barbara County and they told me you either tear all these buildings down because they were

not up to code or you have to upgrade them. I shook my head and didn’t know if I could afford to do it. Meanwhile, the farmer on the property pulls me aside and said,

“Bilo, you know you have a vineyard on the property. There are 5 acres of Sauvignon Blanc. Let’s sell it to Campanile Restaurant on La Brea. I went down there to thank them for getting my wine and they told me they love using it for cooking. So, my ego was busted. I took off to UC Davis, studied viticulture

and that was the start of my passion.” (continued...)

Master wine maker Nebil “Bilo” Zarif is the reason why we can indulge our deepest desires in wine. The Santa Barbara Life & Style team sat down with

Bilo to see if we could uncover the secret to his success.

What drew you into the winery business?

It seems like that lit the flame under you? Bilo: “It challenges me in something that I never thought I would be in. I was in the cotton seed oil busi-ness with my dad. I helped my dad try the oil, so I knew how to test the pH and knew what to look for. Then I went into the black oil busi-ness. So in order to really challenge myself, and create a great Califor-nia wine was to learn the old world ways and apply it to the new world and making sure that we want to make everybody understand that the Central Coast is the best region for wine. France always boasts that they are the best, but we really have the best climate and soil for wine. I sent in our Pinot to The Bordeau Wine Festival in France to challenge their wine and we came in 2nd place.” Besides making exceptional wine, do you have any other hobbies to pass the time between harvests?

Bilo: “Riding horses and traveing around the world tasting various wine.” (continued...)

Meet Bluey! Summerland Winery’s

ambassador! You can expect to meet Bluey upon your

arrival with a wet kiss and a warm snuggle.

We adore Lisa Vanderpump and see you cater to her wine needs for her restaurant Villa Blanca in Bever-ly Hills, can you tell us a little bit about her and her brand?

Bilo: “We had a mutual friend and were having dinner in the same restaurant. We are at this great restaurant and we start talking and they were thinking of opening a restaurant and wanted to do some-thing special. They came and visited the tasting room to make a blend, I took them to the vineyard, and all of that was on the show [Real Housewives of Beverly Hills]. She has great taste, wonderful taste. She is an exceptional woman! We did a wonderful blend for them. I like to give a choice of quality and caliber for private blends.”

You create private blends for some of the most prestigious restaurants and hotels. What made you want to expand?

Bilo: “I am very, very happy to be more of a local winery where I am doing some private labels. My se-cret is I like to meet the people I want to make wine for. I like to really feel them out before I make their wine. My heart is in it.” You have been everywhere. What is your favorite place to visit?

Bilo: “Santa Barbara, this is the most beautiful place to be. I can ride horses on the beach, walk my dog on the beach, I can go to great restaurants. The weather is perfect. Why would I want to go anywhere else? I get to relax.

Bilo’s wine is featured in countless upscale

restaurants and hotels. The Beverly Hills Hotel, Ritz Carlton, Caesar’s Palace, El Encanto Hotel, Four Seasons, Orient Express, Bel Air Hotel, Villa Blanca, and the The Granada Hotel just to name a few.

If you haven’t been to the tasting room yet, he just unveiled a new addition to the Summerland lineup: the Blanc de Noir - a Califronia bubbly. We are obsessed!
