Dear Friends in Christ,
Merry Christmas (in advance).
This Fourth Sunday of Advent situates us at the threshold of Christmas, which we will celebrate on Tuesday. Some of the expectations of the Christmas Season are “Peace on Earth”, Emmanuel (God with us), Joy and Peace among others.
The very idea of incarnation, that is, God taking human flesh in the womb of Mary and His birth indicates his ultimate purpose for humanity, which is to set man free from the entanglements of sin and over preoccupation with values that are temporal. In other words, by his becoming one with us, God
wants to bring us His peace and love. There is always a continuous attempt by man to shut his innermost being from this rebirth of God in us. Sometimes we preoccupy ourselves with other values to the point where there is no space in the inn for him. The Christmas season, not just a day, but beginning from Christmas day to the Baptism of the Lord on January 13th presents us with the opportunity to rejoice but also to open our heart more and more to the cause of our joy, the Emmanuel- God with us. He comes at His choice, regardless of our limitations, to live with us so we can contem-plate His love, share His peace and become agents of love, peace and reconciliation for others. As part of welcoming Him to our hearts we are also called to welcome others who are shut out and those who do not belong, that is, those who, like the baby Jesus, are not given a place in the inn. Those rejected by power and the power-ful because they are weak and meek, those rejected and denied their rights. In all the rejects of our world, that is, those who find no room in the inn, we find Jesus. The more that we are open to love, the more we share our joy and peace with them, the more we open our inner room for Jesus who through his incarnation and nativity has taken the face of every human person. After Christmas day I will take my annual vacation, traveling with the ImaBridge team, bringing the peace of Jesus to people in Africa. Thank you too for supporting our efforts and please keep us in your prayers. I will see you at the end of January. May Jesus the Prince of Peace, through the intercession of His parents and ours, Mary and Joseph, bring His peace to you and to our world. Amen. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Fr. Godwin

A Prayer for Christmas
Child of Bethlehem, grant that we may share with all our hearts
in this profound mystery of Christmas. Put into our hearts this peace for
which we sometimes seek so desperately and which you alone can give us.
Help us to know one another better, and live as brothers and sisters,
children of the same Father. Reveal to us also
your beauty, holiness and purity. Awaken in our hearts love and gratitude
for your infinite goodness. Join us all together in your love,
And give us your heavenly peace. Amen.
~Pope St. John XXIII

Respect Life Ministry
“Thank You”
The Respect Life Ministry (part of the Marriage, Family & Life Ministry) would like to thank you the parishioners for your support of the Baby Bottle Boomerang and the Northwest Herald Signature Ad. The Baby Bottle Boom-erang raised $1,319. This will be split evenly with 1st Way Pregnancy Center in Johnsburg, Catholic Charities and the Respect Life ministry. The Signature Ad raised $229, which will be used to offset the cost of printing the ad. Thank you again for your support.

Word of Life
“To couples who cannot have children of their own, you are no less loved by God; your love for each oth-er is complete and fruitful when it is open to others.” Pope Saint John Paul II, February 13, 1982 Homily, © 1982 Libreria Editrice Vaticana. Used with permission. www.goo.gl/jLDs4e

Celebrating Children at St. Patrick
To the parents of our young children, may we suggest:
∗Relax! God put the wiggle in children; don’t feel you have to suppress it in
God’s house. All are welcome! ∗Sit toward the front on St. Joseph’s side or in the chapel. It will be easier for your little ones to see and hear. Should you need to leave with them - the TV in the library broadcasts the Mass and the washroom is convenient. ∗Quietly explain the parts of the Mass and actions of the priest, ushers, choir, etc. to them. Teach them to talk in a “church” voice. ∗Sing the prayers, pray and voice the responses. Chil-dren learn liturgical behavior by copying you. ∗If you have to leave Mass, please feel free to do so, but please come back. Jesus and we want you there.
To the members of our church: The presence of the children is a gift to the Church and they are a reminder that our parish family is grow-ing. Please welcome our children and give a smile of encouragement to their parents.
A great promise was made for those completing The Five First Saturdays’. Mary promised to help at the hour of death, with the graces necessary for salvation, all those who com-plete this Devotion. This great promise was obtained from God by our loving Mother. In essence Catholics avoid dying in a state of mortal sin by doing the requirements of this De-votion. Simply put you join Mary’s List.
Father Godwin has made this special spiritual gift available to parishioners at St. Patrick going on four years. On January 5th, First Saturday, all the requirements of this devotion will be completed at our church beginning with confes-sions at 7:30AM, followed by Mass at 8:00AM followed by praying of the Rosary and Meditation on the Rosary.

Adult Faith Formation Presents
An Eight-Part Bible Study Featuring Jeff Cavins Paul’s letter to the Ephesians reveals many remarkable gifts that we as Christians are given in the Church. This letter tells us about the nature of the Church—as a body, as a household, as a mystery, as a communion, as a bride, and as an army. It shows us the great inheritance that awaits us as sons and daughters, adopted fully into the family of God. It reveals how God’s great love for us can transform our daily lives—if we allow it. Ephesians will enrich your faith—and show you how to live it out.

Vocation Corner
Christmas is just two days away! Can you believe it? I imagine your house is ready for the celebration with bright lights, a decorated tree, and beautiful gifts wrapped and waiting to be placed under that tree. Yet, is your heart ready to welcome Christ into the world on Christmas morning? What I mean by this is: have you spent time praying over the birth of Christ and meditating on the fact that the God of the Universe left his throne to become an infant who would one day save the entire world? This prayer is crucial in the coming days because only by meditating on the birth of Christ and His mission in the world can you also discover the mission that God has for you. No matter how hard we try, we human beings can never know why we were created, only God can re-veal that to us and He is so very eager to do so! So make sure to spend some quiet time in prayer over the next couple of days meditating on the birth and mission of Christ and, in time, God will show you your mission, as well!

St. Patrick Catholic Church Parish Registration - Do You Need to Register?
ARE YOU: (1) New to the parish; (2) Moving back; (3) Just Married; (4) Attending mass but never officially regis-tered? (5) Even if you grew up in St. Patrick, you (as an adult—18+) need to register independent from your par-ents.
Please do not take your church registration for grant-ed. Attending Mass is not enough; there must be an offi-cial record of your membership in the Parish. Parish reg-istration is essential for many reasons. It becomes im-portant when you or your family members are receiving the Sacraments - First Communion, Baptism, Confirmation and Marriage. Registration is also required for those wish-ing to become a Baptism or Confirmation sponsor. In addi-tion, becoming a member of a parish gives one the identity of belonging to a family—the parish family of St. Patrick Catholic Church.
If you are not officially registered with the parish, please do so as soon as possible. All you have to do is contact the parish office at 815-385-0025 or stop in during office hours and request a registration packet. Registration packets are also available on the parish website at www.stpatrickmchenry.org—just click on Registration at the top of the home page.
Attention Parish Ministry Members
Become fully compliant with the Safe Environment Diocesan Mandate
by attending a LIVE training session of the Protecting God’s Children program.
Bishop Malloy and Father Godwin can’t stress enough how important this is for our parish and Diocese: If you haven’t undergone this training - Please make sure to attend one of our upcoming LIVE TRAINING sessions:
Wednesday, January 9 at 9:30 AM
Wednesday, February 20 at 4:30 PM
Sunday, March 31 at 10:00 AM (after 9 AM Mass)
The length is about 2 hours and 15 minutes in the LANE room (parish office basement). Refreshments served. You will receive an official certificate of completion at the end of the ses-sion. This training is ONLY required to be taken ONCE: It is GOOD FOR A LIFETIME. Please make every effort to attend.
These sessions are graciously imparted by parishioner Kathy Brady-Murfin, a member of our parish Pastoral Council and Evangelization Committee, who joined St. Pat’s last spring and is an official diocesan trainer of the Protecting God’s Children program:
Remember: The Diocesan Safe Environment mandate is not only for those working with the Youth & Children - it’s re-quired of ANY ministry member who could potentially witness questionable behavior on our parish grounds: Let us train you on how to proceed to properly report a case of illegal/immoral conduct. Thank you.
Parish volunteers are also able to obtain this PGC certificate by conducting the 1 hour Virtus online training. Find more information about the Diocesan Safe Environment program in our parish website at www.stpatrickmchenry.org/Safe Envi-ronment, or at https://www.rockforddiocese.org/protecting-gods-children.
Please contact Carla Odahowski with any questions at 815-385-0025 or at codahowski@stpatrickmchenry.org

Dear St. Patrick’s Parishioners,
Merry Christmas!
As we prepare to celebrate this joyful season, I wanted to take some time to update you on the ministry work I have been doing. In August, I started working with NET Ministries. NET stands for National Evangelization Teams. My team is from all over the country (Washington to Flori-
da), and we go all over the country spreading the gospel to youth. This year on NET there are 16 teams and I am on Team 8. We are a travel retreat team that covers the New England area. So far we have put on over 50 retreats in Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Wisconsin, and Minnesota.
My team has 11 people on it, five men and six women. My role on the team is Team Leader. My favorite part of retreat ministry is leading retreats and knowing that the Lord is the one that is leading me daily. The retreatants might not re-member our names, but they remember how the team treats them with love and respect. One retreatant, Taylor (Age 13) from New Hampshire wrote: “It was extremely powerful. It opened up my eyes to God. It was fun and interactive. The team was caring and compassionate.”
Throughout our travel we stay with families that volunteer to host us at their homes. It’s very humbling to rely so much on the generosity of others and to be lovingly welcomed by complete strangers. Sometimes we only stay for one short night, but with every family I know that we both gave and received the love of Christ.
Something that being on NET has taught me so far is the importance of having a personal relationship with the Lord. A habit of daily prayer is one way that the team stays close to the Lord. Even throughout all our traveling, it is important that we find a half hour of daily prayer in the morning. It has shown me how to surrender the day to the Lord and follow His plan. NET has also taught me the importance of community and youth ministry. I am grateful to have grown up at St. Patrick Church, with a joyful and loving community to encourage me to grow in my faith. I can’t wait to bring back what I’ve learned on NET and share with the youth at our parish how a personal relationship with God can transform your life.
Merry Christmas and God Bless, Casey Buenzli NET Ministries 2018-2019, Team 8

Sacraments
Baptism of Infants or children under 7 years of age:
To schedule a Baptism, please begin by calling the parish office. Baptism is celebrated on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month immediately after the 11AM Mass. Please con-sider scheduling your child’s Baptism before your child is born to ensure an opening in the month of your choice. In addition, a Baptismal preparation class is required for the parents. This is a one session class that is held on the 1st Sunday of each month after the 9AM Mass. Sign-up is re-quired and you may take the class before your child is born. You must be a registered parishioner of St. Patrick prior to scheduling a Baptism.
Sacrament of Marriage: At St. Patrick, couples planning to marry need to meet with the Pastor before a wedding date can be set. Please contact the parish office to setup an initial meeting at least 6 months prior to any requested marriage date. This initial meeting will give you an overview of the requirements for marriage and the preparation required. At least one of the couple, or their parents, must be registered parishioners for at least 6 months and be active participating members of St. Pat-rick Church in order to be married at the church. Both individuals must be at least 19 years of age.
Annulment Process - Information
If you or someone you know needs a previous marriage investigated for its validity or invalidity (the annulment pro-cess) so that you may fully participate in your Catholic faith or become Catholic please call the Tribunal Office at 815-399-4300.
