Seaside.The social season here opened last

Season Is Opening Rather Slowly-Wea- ther

Is Delightful.Although new faces are dally arriving

on the scene, the season 13 progressingrather slowly. Many of the cottages arestill unoccupied, and, as yet, hotel ac-commodations are in excess of the demand. The weather conditions, withthe exception of the last few days, havebeen delightful and beach picnics are ofdaily occurrence. The wreck of theschooner Frank W. Howe, at Seaside,seems to be the principal attraction andis visited daily by throngs of people. Thelighthouses at North Head and Canby,and the life-savi- station at OceanParle, are also regarded as pleasure re-sorts, and come in for their share ofvisitors and pleasure-seeker- s who comefrbm all parts of the beach.

The Breakers.A delightful dinner party was given

last Friday evening by Mr. and Mrs. E.A. Baldwin and Mr. and Mrs. W. L.Boise. The table was beautifully deco-rated with sweet peas and ferns andpresented an artistic appearance. Afterdinner bridge whist was played untillate In the evening, when additional re-freshments were served. The guests re-mained here over night and departed thenext morning for the Willows, wherethey are spending the Summer. Thoseinvited were: Mr. and Mrs. J. WesleyJjadd. Mr. and Mrs. J. K. The Oregon State Pharmaceutical As-sociation held Its 14th annual meetinghere on Tuesday. Wednesday and Thurs-day of last week. The party, consistingof about 76 members, arrived from Port-land Tuesday afternoon and spent theevening with music and dancing in anInformal way. Wednesday morning theyleft by special train for the Ocean ParkLife-Savi- Station, whore a surf drillwas witnessed. When this was con-cluded the special train proceeded to theend of the line at Nahcotta and returnedin time for lunch. the Driftwood whereby all late comersto meals are to be fined 5 cents for eachoffense. SEASON OPENS AT NEWPORT

Summer Rush Has Commenced toYaquina Bay.

NEWPORT, Or., July 15. (Special.)The season here has hardly begun. Thecottages and camping grounds have be-gun to be filled, but there are few regu-lar boarders at the hotels. The hotelshave entertained a good many guests, butthese only stay for a day or two. Sincethe Fourth more people are coming, anda larger crowd Is expected this seasonthan last.

The Winter waves have left a gooddeal of driftwood on the beach, but therehas been few evening flres because theevenings have been so windy and foggy.

BEACH.

The principal events of the week are thedances at the OperaHouse given eachTuesday, Thursday and Friday nights bythe Chemawa Indian Band. Another fea-

ture of Interest to most people is the ar-rival of a merry-go-roun- d, and the min-iature train. This train will run fromthe top of the hill back of Newport toNye Creek for the convenience of thetired people who have climbed the hill.

Concerts are given by the Chemawa In-

dian Band each evening at the arrival oftho 1joat.
