Rock mechanical engineering as well as underground mining systems are main elds of research at the Chair of Mining. Besides theoretical investigations and laboratory analyses the Chair has worked closely together for a long time with industry partners operating underground mines under various geotechnical conditions. These industry projects cover the needs of our partners and f ocus ma in l y on m ine p l ann i ng and optimization. The data and experience gained in the projects is later on also used for scientic activities. Basically the main research topics are strength and behaviour of rock and rock mass, rock mass description, pillar systems, regional consequences of underground mining activities, interdependencies between underground mining and nearby open-pit operations, support of stopes and access workings, optimization of well-established mining systems and development of new mining

systems.Over the years considerable knowledge has been accumulated for numerous mining environments. These knowledge is used in the industry projects and transferred to our students in the courses “Mining Rock Mechanics 1”, “Mining Rock Mechanics 2” and “Underground Mining”. Moreover the students have the possibility to participate in projects to extent their theoretical knowledge with practical experience. For this reason the Chair of Mining offers an excellent education in underground mining as well as rock mechanics. To sum it up, these partnerships are of considerable benet for both sides, the industry and the Chair of Mining.

THE CHAIR OF MINING WORKS CLOSELY TOGETHER WITH INDUSTRY PARTNERS ALL OVEREUROPE ON ROCK MECHANICAL ISSUES AND UNDERGROUND MINE DESIGN.
