Planning is well underway for
the Roanoke Jaycees 2nd an-
nual Big Lick Beertopia hap-
pening on June 9, 2012.
Beertopia celebrates the
world of craft beer by bring-
ing brewers from around the
country to LewisGale Field,
home of the Salem Red Sox,
for tastings, musical enter-
tainment, and philanthropy.
Last year, we held the first
ever Beertopia (then known
as Brewtopia), featuring sam-
ples for over 20 craft brewer-
ies. The event was held as a
benefit for the Camp VA Jay-
cees, CHIP of the Roanoke
Valley, and the Salem-
Roanoke County Food Pan-
try. We were able to donate
60% of our profits to these
great causes. Our goal this
year is to expand on last
year’s success and make the
event bigger and better!
In addition to delicious
brews, the event will feature
two local bands, The Mate-
ria Project and Corey Hun-
ley. The Materia Project
wows its audiences with its
infectious funk/soul/roots/
fusion sound while local
singer-songwriter Corey
Hunley inspires listeners
through a mix of acoustic,
blues, and folk melodies.
As a new feature this year,
the Jaycees have partnered
with the Star City brewers
Guild to host a home brew
competition. Contestants
can enter in up to three of
four categories.

Planning Underway for Big Lick Beertopia 2012
Greetings current and former Roanoke Jaycee Members. It’s our pleasure to welcome you to the inaugural issue of our bi-annual newsletter!
In addition to sharing current and future events, our aim for the newsletter is to reconnect with Jaycee Alumni.
We hope you will find the newsletter enjoyable and in-
formative. If you have thoughts for future newslet-ters—such as a favorite Jay-cees memory— or com-ments, please let us know.
Although we try to keep track of all alumni, some have fallen through the cracks. If you know of any-one that would like to hear from us, encourage them to contact us! Also, please up-
date us with your own e-mail, address, or phone number changes so we can stay connected.
Again, we look forward to sharing with you our chap-ter’s continued successes and renewing those lifetime relationships through the Jaycees.

“Dinner Time” at the Ronald McDonald House

‘Fear Factory’ Out-Scares Competition, Wins 2011 Broom Hilda Award
Jaycees Volunteers mugging for the camera after a fun
evening of meal preparation for the Ronald McDonald
House “Dinner Time” program.
Most of us would agree, there’s
nothing like a warm meal at the
end of a long, hard day. For fami-
lies staying at the Roanoke Ronald
McDonald House, these much-
needed meals are provided by
groups like the Jaycees on a regular
basis.
On Sunday, February 26, the Jay-
cees had 10 volunteers help pre-
pare a buffet-style taco dinner with
all the fixings for the Ronald
McDonald House families. Mem-
bers cooked, chopped, baked, and
cleaned their ways to a delicious
meal. Even after food preparation,
members had fun milling around
the kitchen sharing stories and
getting to know one another!
The Ronald McDonald House
“Dinner Time” program is just
one of our regular service events.
Our next dinner preparation will
be sometime in December. We
look forward to getting together
again to help bring a touch of
home to those so far away from
their normal homes.
took over six weeks of plan-
ning and organizing. Volun-
teers helped throughout the
event in a number of capaci-
ties including behind-the-
scenes, taking tickets, guid-
ing visitors, and of course,
as the frightful actors.
As a community tie-in, visi-
tors could donate canned
food items for a dollar off
admission. Other proceeds
benefited CHIP of Roanoke
Valley, Feeding America,
and Camp Virginia Jaycee.

Jaycee Creed We Believe...
That faith in God gives meaning and purpose to hu-man life;
That the brotherhood of man transcends the sover-eignty of nations;
That economic justice can best be won by free men through free enterprise;
That government should be of laws rather than of men;
That earth's great treasure lies in human personality;
And that service to humanity is the best work of life.

The Winter Retreat is just
one of the Jaycees many fun
get-togethers. Over the past
year, we have also held a
pool party, Red Sox night,
Virginia Tech tailgate, Holi-
day party, and Superbowl
party just to hang out and
relax together. Have an idea
for a fun event? Post your
idea on the Facebook group
or email it!
From March 9 to the 11th,
Jaycees gathered in scenic
Gatlinburg, TN for a week-
end getaway. Members ate,
drank, and relaxed their way
to a good time around town
and at the grand mountain
cabin. We asked a few mem-
bers to recount their favorite
moment during the retreat:
"I think everyone had a great
time together. I enjoyed
bonding with some of the
girls during our shopping
trip on Saturday. Anytime
you get a good group of Jay-
cees away for the weekend,
fun times will ensue!" -
