1. Power relations between you & the community. Do not be the know-all & do-all person.

2. You cannot solve all the problems in the world. Choose a cause & focus your energies.

Work in

coalitions.

3. Network with like-minded

groups.

4. Don’t impose project on communities based on your own “expert” knowledge. Rather, engage in grassroots self-empowerment.

5. Empower the poorest of the poor with the greatest need.

6. Let the community come up with their own

needs assessment.

7. Work with grassroots

leaders.

8. Develop

second-liner

leaders.

9. Community members & leaders are most important, not you!

10. Empower the community by making

sure they have the necessary skills for

their advocacy & development work.

11. As an outsider, you need to earn the

trust of the community members.

12. There are so many different ways to bring about change.

13. Have a Plan B, C, D, etc.
