Remember This

• Deut. is Moses’ memoirs, writtendown, so that Israel would remember

• Moses knew that the people were forgetful

• So, he identified key “memory enemies”

“… you shall remember

the whole way that the

LORD your God … ”

“…lest you forget the

LORD your God…”

“…and you forget the

LORD your God…”

“You shall remember the

LORD your God…”

“… and if you forget…”

Chapter 8

All Points Bulletin

• Moses warned the Israelites against the real potential of forgetting God

– He called for “great care” against forgetting

– Failure to remember is a dangerous practice that leads to death

• Moses described the potential perils as a protection against failure

Disobedience

• Not keeping His

– commandments

– rules

– statutes

• These have been repeated again in Deut.

v.11

Arrogance

• After you have

– eaten and are full

– built good houses and moved into them

– increased your livestock

– multiplied silver & gold

– gained lots of stuff

• Lifting your heart up in pride

vv.12-14a

REMEMBER!!

• He brought you out of slavery

• He led you through the dangerous wilderness

• He gave you water from a rock

• He served you bread that was new to you

vv.14b-16a

Independence

• “My power and mighty hand have gotten me this wealth”

– arrogance and independence are “brothers”

• You would not be here except for God’s help

v.17

REMEMBER!!

• The situations that have revealed God’s goodness.

• The gifted strength & ability to get wealth.

• The covenant He has made with you.

Co-existence

• Going after other gods

– to serve them

– to worship them

• You will surely perish

• There is a track record of death for other criminals

vv.19-20

Prayers

• Help me to obey You completely without ‘loopholes’.

• Grow gratitude in me through a sticky historical mind.

• Break my independent spirit.

• Bind my wandering heart to You alone.
