DRUG REPURPOSING

Literature search shows increasing interest in drug repurposing

“BIG PHARMA” DRUG DISCOVERY IN THE 21ST CENTURY

The Problem: The pharmaceutical industry is short of new drugs.

In the 2nd part of the 20th century, about 50-60 new drugs (NCEs) were approved by

the FDA every year.

In contrast, in 2002, a historical low of 17 NCEs were approved (in 2001, 24 NCEs, in

2000, 27 NCEs, in 2003, 21 NCEs).

RESEARCH COST

research costs for a

new drug are

estimated to be in

the $1-1.5 Bi. range.

Considering all high-

profile failures in

recent drug discovery,

this figure is unlikely

to drop substantially

4

DRUG REPURPOSING

• Fewer safety concerns

• Saves money

• Less time to get a drug to market

• New opportunities

KETAMINE

Used as an anesthetic for the past 50 years

Over the last 5 years there has been increased interest in studying it’s use in mood disorders, as a vasodilator, and as an antinflammatory, among other things.

Use Reaxys Medicinal Chemistry to get a profile of Ketamine and related drugs

22

MARKETED DRUGS

Look for drugs that have antiparasitic/antiprotozoal activity and are currently on the market. Which targets are involved in their activity?

23
