TEXT:THE SCIENCE OF CLIMATE CHANGE

An excerpt from the Competitive Enterp ise Institute on the "hockey sticktheory" of global warming:

"The main propaganda device of the [United Nations Third Assessment Reporton climate change) is the 'hockey stic~ graph.' The graph is atemperature record derived from tree rings dating back to 1000 AD andrunning through 1900, with the 20th ce tury thermometer-based temperaturedata attached at the end. It claims tc show that global temperatures haveremained steady or even decreased durn g the last millennium until theindustrial age, when there was an anomalbus warming represented by theblade of the hockey stick. The hockey stick is largely bogus, however. The margin of error is so large that nearly any temperature trend could bedrawn to fit within it.

"Global warming alarmists use the hockeL stick to claim that currentwarming is greater than at any other tine in the last 1,000 years. TheMedieval Warm Period (MWP) and the Little Ice Age (LIA) were two naturallyoccurring events during the last millen ium where the range of globaltemperature change exceeded that of the 20th century. During the MWP,global temperatures were higher than th y are today. The MWP, however, does not show up in the hockey stick gr ph.

"The hockey stick theory has effectively been dismahtled by, among others,Dr. Sallie Baliunas and Dr. Willie Soon of Harvard in their recentlypublished meta-analysis of 240 peer-rev-ewed climate studies. Also,Wallace Broecker, of the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, argued inScience magazine that the MWP and the L'[A were indeed global phenomena.Referring to the hockey stick, Broecker notes, 'A recent, widely citedreconstruction leaves the impression th t the 20th century warming wasunique during the last millennium. It shows no hint of the Medieval WarmPeriod (from around 800 to 1200 A.D.) d ring which the Vikings colonizedglobal. It also remains unclear why just at the dawn of the IndustrialRevolution and before the emission of s bstantial amounts of anthropogenic[manmade) greenhouse gases, Earth's tem erature began to rise steeply.'"
