 Hand-Eye, Hand-Foot Coordination

 Power Generation

Step 3: Modify drills to improve your players fundamental and volleyball-based specialized movement patterns.

This is the most challenging part of youth coaching. You need to teach volleyball skills while solidifying their movement patterns. This changes what your goals are and how you should motivate your team.

Rudimentary PlayersRudimentary PlayersRudimentary PlayersRudimentary Players◦ Physically behind her age

maturation.◦ Major flaws in fundamental

movement patterns.◦ Major flaws in specialized movement

patterns. These are the players that tend to be ignored in practices. Focus on fixing the root cause of their errors; the flaws in their movement patterns. You may have to modify the drill . 1-on-1 coaching time is critical for these players.

Beginning PlayersBeginning PlayersBeginning PlayersBeginning Players◦ Maturation is age appropriate.◦ Major flaws in 1-2 fundamental

movement patterns.◦ Major flaws in specialized movement

patterns. These players need some work on there fundamental movements, but you will see a dramatic improvement in their specialized skills as a result.

Intermediate PlayersIntermediate PlayersIntermediate PlayersIntermediate Players◦ Maturation tends to be slightly

ahead.◦ Minor flaws in fundamental

movement patterns.◦ Major flaws in 1-2 specialized

movement patterns. These player need some small group coaching in the beginning of the season, but flourish after they retain the improvements. Coach tend to push these player too fast. Be patience, by mid season they can be coached like an advanced player.

Advanced PlayersAdvanced PlayersAdvanced PlayersAdvanced Players◦ Maturation is 2-3 year ahead.◦ Solid fundamental movement

patterns.◦ Solid specialized movement patterns. These players tend to be either the be the focus of practice or become bored because they are ahead of their age. The best option is to modify the goal of the drill for those players so they continue improve.

PLAN , PLAN, PLAN◦ Always come with a printed practice plan and forms to track your teams performance.

Use your advanced players◦ You can ask your advanced players to toss, feed balls or run a drill while you coach others.

Concise Feedback◦ Coaches tend to give to much feedback. Based on your practice plan only give feedback surrounding the skills you are working on that day.

Use Player-Centered Drills◦ Have your player toss and feed, use stations. This allows you to be free to coach.

Focus in form and improvement not the outcome.

Coaches tend to cheer for

the advance player ability perform high level skills. If you focus on all players improving their form you will give praise more evenly.

 BE POSTIVE!

Your feedback should

sound like this:

“You are doing X well, now work on Y for me. Great Job!!”

Great coaching task:

For the next 24 hours

practice only saying yes.

• All goals should be based on your teams initial assessments.

• Team Goals should be public and checked on regular intervals.

• Individual goals must be kept between you and the player only.
