From the gates of Russia to the far reaches of Oceania, the diversity of the UIC Asia-Pacific

region is such that we felt it important to have images that best represent the railways of this region. On the following pages you will find an array of photos sent to us by our members, illustrating their customers in real-life situations, railway facilities, staff at work, and scenes from everyday life as well as exceptional events. We did not set out to achieve anything extraordinary or mundane, even if readers from other UIC regions may find some of these photos unusual. On the contrary: these photos are representative of the work carried out every day by railway men and women in this part of the world.

The UIC Asia-Pacific region encompasses almost 40 members as well as the world’s biggest railways in terms of size, staff and traffic volume. Economically speaking it represents:

 60% of the world’s population,

The world’s highest GDP with China alone set to become the world’s biggest economy in 2015, ahead of the EU,

Highest GDP per capita in the world,

Apart from the US, the highest freight volumes and increases,

50% of the world’s rail passengers by 2025.

This shows the region’s potential in terms of its own needs as well in terms of trade with its neighbours, representing:

 40% world imports/exports,

Up to 60 million TEUs intra-Asia and up to 40 million TEUs between Asia and Europe by 2025,

A significant contribution to the 20% increase in the global rail market by 2016.

Whilst being the driving force of the world economy during the financial crisis.

However, UIC is aware of the significant differences between its members in terms of railway development and investment priorities – harsh Siberian winters, tropical South-East Asian heat, dry Central Asian deserts and steppes, as well as vast swathes of countryside, some of the highest population densities as well as some of the lowest, etc. are some of the daily challenges. This is why UIC offers its members a core set of common values around which actions and projects can be conducted in the interest of all.

Happy reading and we hope you enjoy your photo journey as you discover the immense diversity of railways in the Asia-Pacific region.
