Quality Management in E-learning

What is Quality?

A product is of good quality when it meets customer needs, especially in terms of availability, usage, and safety.

Quality is "the totality of features and characteristics of a product or service that bear on its ability to satisfy stated or implied needs."

What can go wrong in e-learning?• Mismatch between the learning objectives of the

course and the business goals to be achieved

• Spelling mistakes and grammatical errors in the content

• Images not aligned correctly, lack of readability due to background colors and image overlaps

• Non-functional navigation elements such as buttons, links to external resources

• Improper audio sync in interactivities

• Incorrectly tracked assessments

• Incorrect course completion status on the LMS

Quality Measures

GUI Testing

Checks whether the GUI (Graphical User Interface), colors, and visual elements used in the course conform to the client’s corporate branding and color palette.

The course is checked to ensure all elements such as buttons, links, audio, etc.) function as needed. It checks the mechanical aspects of the course.

Functionality Testing

Compliance Testing

Checks:• Whether the course is compatible with and runs

on all delivery platforms(desktops, laptops, mobiles, etc.) and browsers

• If the bookmarking feature functions as intended • If the course completion status is tracked

correctly (Pass/Fail or Complete/Incomplete) on the LMS

Online Testing

The course is checked online to ensure learners do not face any loading issues and ensure:

• Images are displayed properly• Animations play correctly• Links to external documents and URLs

function correctly

Aims to spot areas learners are likely to face issues such as course navigation, accessing interactive elements, etc.

Usability Testing

User Acceptance Test

This is an additional test, not commonly conducted. The course is assigned to a group of sample users to:

• Collect their feedback • Identify issues from learners’

perspective (such as a hard to use interactivities, complex navigation, etc.)

Before we leave, let us quickly recap what we have learned.Quality is "the totality of features and characteristics of a product or service that bear on its ability to satisfy stated or implied needs".

Quality measures include:• GUI Testing• Functionality Testing• Compliance Testing• Online Testing• Usability Testing• User Acceptance Test
