Publishing Concepts to Derive Multiple Digital Data Formats Using ArcGIS

The Geologic Resources Inventory (GRI) is one of 12 inventories funded under the National ParkService(NPS)NaturalResourceChallengeandisadministeredbytheGeologicResourcesDivision(GRD)oftheNaturalResourceStewardshipandScienceDirectorate(NRSS).ThegoaloftheGRIistoincreaseunderstandingofthegeologicprocessesatworkinparksandprovideaccurategeologicinformationforuseinparkdecision-making.Soundparkstewardshipreliesonunderstandingnaturalresourcesandtheirroleintheecosystem,ofwhichgeologyisthefoundation.TheGRIreliesheavilyonpartnershipswithColoradoStateUniversity(CSU),theU.S.GeologicalSurvey,individualstategeologicalsurveys,andotherorganizationsindevelopingitsproducts.CSUresearchassociatesworkside-by-sidewithNPSGRDGRIstafftofacilitateascopingmeetingthatidentifiesparkmappingneeds,aswellaspark-specificgeologicissues,features,andprocesses.ForeachparktheGRIthencreatesasummaryofthescopingmeeting,producesdigitalgeologicmapproducts,andwritesageologicreportforusebyparkstaff.

The Geologic Resources Inventory

Digital geologic-GIS data andmaps are increasingly being used by planners and policymakers toinfluenceandguidedecisionsconcerningthemanagementandprotectionofgeologicresources.Additionally,GISandspatialvisualizationsoftwarehavebecomemoreaccessiblewithfunctionalitytargetedatamuchbroadergroupofusers.
