1. SITUATIONOVERVIEW

TheemergencyresponseafterthetsunamithathitcoastalareasinBantenandLampungProvincesisongoing

bydayandnight.HighandstrongwavessuddenlyhitthelandswithoutwarningonDecember22nd,2018at

9.30PMofWesternIndonesiaTime(WIB).ThetotalcasualtiesuptoDecember24th,basedonBNPBofficial

statement,373peoplearefounddead,1.459areinjured,128peoplearestillmissing,and5.665arenow

displaced.Moreover,about681housesaredamaged,69hotelsareheavilydamaged,andotherbuildingsas

wellasassetsaredamaged.

Localgovernmentsareworkinghandinhandwitharmy,policeandcentralgovernmenttoevacuateasmany

livesaspossibleandprovidingdirectassistanttothesurvivors.TheaffectedareasareintheRegenciesof

Pandeglang and Serang at Lampung Province and also Regencies of Lampung Selatan, Tanggamus and

PesawaranatLampungProvince.ThemostaffectedareawithmostcasualtiesisPandeglangRegency.The

survivorsreceivemedicaltreatmentatthenearestclinicsandhospitals.Sofar,thereisnosignificantobstacle

toaccesstheaffectedareaswithlandvehicles.Thecommunicationfacilitiesandcoveragesarereliable.

2. CARITASRESPONSE• ThetsunamihitBantenandLampungareasinwhichthefirstareaisundertheDioceseofBogorand

thelaterareaisundertheDioceseofTanjungKarang.OnDecember24th,RD.Y.EkoYulianto,the

head of Caritas Diocese of Bogor, activated its emergency response mechanism to provide

emergencyresponseneedstotheaffectedpopulationincooperationwiththeParishofKristusRaja,

SerangandParishofSt.MariaTakBernoda,RangkasBitung.TheCaritasworkswithMissionHospital

Lebak(belongstoFranciscanSister)toprovidefooditemsandmedicalsupports.

• Meanwhile in Lampung, on December 23rd, Yudo Pambudi, the head of Caritas Tanjung Karang

organizedhisteamtodoemergencyresponseactivities.Sofartheyhadalreadyprovidedfooditems

forsurvivors.OnDecember24thmorning,theyprovided700packsoffooditems(readytoeat):500

todistricthospitaland200toservicepostatKaliandaDistrict.Today,December25th,theyprovided

1.000packsoffooditemsforsurvivorsinthesameareaandotheraffectedareas.

• TheroleofCaritasDioceseofBogorinthefieldwassupportedbyArchdioceseofJakartathrough

LembagaDayaDharma(LDD).Theysentitsemergencyresponseteamtosupporttheactivitiesand

dataassessmenttofindthesurvivors’needs.

• KARINAsentone4x4vehicletosupportLDDTeamintheirfieldactivity.KARINAwillalsobeready

wheneverbothdioceseswanttoaccessthenationalemergencyfund.

4. PLEDGESANDCONTRIBUTIONS• Theurgentneedsrightnowaredrinkingwater,medicines,fooditems,foodsforchildrenandbabies,

andtents.

• Up to now, Caritas Tanjung Karangwill focus on the provision of food items and public kitchen.

Meanwhile,CaritasDioceseofBogorwillprioritize its interventionafter they complete the rapid

needsassessmentattheaffectedparishes.

5. MEDIAANDCOMMUNICATIONS

The volunteersofMissionHospitalLebakconductedassessmentat thepopulation inBanten.
