Foreword This e-book summarizes the research work done by me and my co-workers during my active tenure in different universities of Gujarat. I was introduced to research by my teacher and guide Prof. J.J. Chinoy who very strongly believed that antioxidants like ascorbic acid (vitamin C) play a very important role in the overall growth and development of plants. During initial period my work pertains to stress physiology and differentiation wherein we have highlighted the role of antioxidants like ascorbic acid, phenols and flavanoids. I have also worked on hybrid vigor ad dwarfism in plants. Here we tried to understand the physiological and biochemical mechanisms. We have also tried to establish a few criteria especially of hybrid vigor. Perhaps the most productive research work of my career was the one done on physiological and biochemical parameters of cotton fibre development. This single celled structure is economically important. A few cells on the outer surface of cotton seeds (ovules) differentiate into fiber initials and grow up to 30 to 50 mm. Using traditional growth analysis and computer based curve fitting methods we have divided its growth into four clear cut phases viz. initiation, elongation, secondary thickening and maturation phase. In all these phases we have studied different enzymes especially those related to auxin synthesis and its degradation, cell wall degradation and secondary thickening enzymes. This work was highly appreciated and referred to by other workers in the field throughout the world and a number of international reviews have discussed it. During later part of my research career I have also worked on the productivity of crop plants. Both photosynthesis and nitrogen metabolism are closely associated with plant productivity. We have studied various aspects of these processes. Our experience with cotton helped us to establish relationship between grain weight and cell enlargement during seed development. In 1995, I moved out of the university to work as the founder director of Gujarat Institute of Desert Ecology, Bhuj ( Kutch) till 2006. I have coordinated a number of projects in this institute. A number of projects were funded by agencies like UNDP, World Bank, Netherland and Government of India. Our work on restoration of Banni grassland was a major achievement of the institute. At the end I wish to say that my journey of research was very pleasant and I have enjoyed every bit of it. I remain indebted to everyone who was associated with me in this journey. I gave my consent to Prof. Dr. Kiran Thakur’s proposal to compile my research papers in the form of the e-book hoping that it would make the studies available to students across the world.
