Arts and Crafts

Or Brand

Art that focuses on the creative experience and the process of making art rather than the end product

What is process art?

Or Brand

• Art movement in 1960s and 1970s, focused on change and non-traditional materials

Process versus Product

Why process art?

● Promotes creativity, risk-taking

● Removes expectations and comparisons

● Alleviates self-judgment of artistic abilities

● “Flow zone”

● Develops motor skills (younger)

● Ownership, decision-making

Why process art?

● Accessible across many ability levels

● (Re)connect with unexpected expression

● Safe way to experiment and explore

● Can be big, messy, out-of-the-box

● Interdisciplinary (mixing activities with art)

● Can be sensory

● Less prep work on your end

BrandingHow do we foster a process-oriented

experience? ● Let go of your own ideas of how something

“should” look; what’s “good”● Be mindful of commentary and feedback● Minimal instructions, maximum options● No or minimal examples/samples● Offer non-traditional and unusual materials● Use time thoughtfully; less time for directions

and feedback, more time for creation and experimentation

● Ask for camper ideas and say yes● Ask questions about their creation and

experience

Or BrandProcess-Product Hybrid

Process-focused that also produces a “good” product; especially good for older campers and teens

Goals and ObjectivesDebriefing art making

Questions you might ask:● What’s the story you have from this?● What did you expect? ● What surprised you?● How did you decide to use the materials

the way you did?● How did this activity make you feel? Why?

What other questions would you ask?

Process-Product

Activity Ideas

● Painting with unusual objects (marbles, mops, toy cars, etc.)

● Gravity painting/ drip painting● Pendulum Painting● Crumpled paper pictures● Surprise assemblage● Collages● Collecting materials and creating art out of it● Paint with your body● Salad spinner spin art● Using marble paints● Draw using utensils tied to sticks
