Debt

• The United States spent $37 million at the national level

• State Debt = $114 million

Loyalists Suffered

•Left for Canada•Not all of the colonies returned land to the Loyalists

Soldiers Left Poor

•Many did not receive pay or pensions

•Given land out west

Northwest Territories

Northwest Ordinance

• Created the Northwest Territory out of lands north of the Ohio River and east of the Mississippi River

• 3 to 5 smaller territories• populations = 60,000 = apply for

statehood• bill of rights for settlers guaranteed

freedom of religion and trial by jury• Prohibited slavery

Ordinance of 1785

• Procedure for the surveying and selling of western lands north of the Ohio River

• Divided territory into lots that were 6x6 miles

• A township contained 36 square miles• Individuals paid $1 an acre• Speculators saw this as a great

investment
