Northwest Territories
Northwest Ordinance
• Created the Northwest Territory out of lands north of the Ohio River and east of the Mississippi River
• 3 to 5 smaller territories• populations = 60,000 = apply for
statehood• bill of rights for settlers guaranteed
freedom of religion and trial by jury• Prohibited slavery
Ordinance of 1785
• Procedure for the surveying and selling of western lands north of the Ohio River
• Divided territory into lots that were 6x6 miles
• A township contained 36 square miles• Individuals paid $1 an acre• Speculators saw this as a great
investment
