2:30pm The Funky Project fuses contemporary funk with classic jazz styles to create a unique sound that leaves listeners in awe. This home town quartet of Pittsburgh teens boasts a sound well beyond their age. The Quartet members include Winston Bell, Henry Schultz, Brandon Terry and Eric Dowell Jr. Their combined sound has been describes as “spectacular”, “inspirational”, and the “future of jazz”.
7:00pm Multifaceted American jazz pianist and composer Emmet Cohen has emerged as one of
his generation’s pivotal figures in music and the related arts. A recognized prodigy, Cohen began Suzuki method piano instruction at age three. Cohen holds a Masters Degree from
the Manhattan School of Music and a Bachelors Degree from the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music. A powerful and charismatic performer, Cohen‘s wide-ranging talents are
reinvigorating contemporary jazz both domestically and internationally.
5:30pm By the age of six, Jevon Rushton was already mesmerizing those around him with his dexterity as a young drummer. At age 14, he began studying at the Pittsburgh High School for the Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) under the tutelage of jazz legend, Roger Humphries. In 2009, he ventured into Broadway as the drummer for national tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit musical CATS. This past April, Jevon was honored to be chosen to create the musical arrangement for An Evening with Musical compositions of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood at the August Wilson Center.
4:00pm Yoko Suzuki is an alto saxophonist, a composer and scholar working in Pittsburgh and New York City. Currently, she teaches jazz history, jazz arranging, and jazz ensemble at the University of Pittsburgh.
