……Where is Reda?

France : more than 125 000 streams of all sorts…

• In France, there are • * 490 rivers : the largest ones : La Seine,

Le Rhône, la Loire, la Garonne. • * 1714 canals• * 1288 mountain streams• * 27347 brooks and creeksAnd France has shores with the (English)

Channel, The Atlantic Ocean, and the Mediterranean sea.

There is no large river in Dijon. But river Seine springs very near

our city.

In Dijon

• Lac Kir• It is an artificial lake. It was Inaugurated in

1964. It is named after its creator Félix Kir (Religious man and mayor of Dijon, he also gave his name to the coktail)., The lake is situated at the West entrance West of Dijon. It soon became a place to rest and have fun.

• There are many species of birds and rondents living in and around it.

King fisher, wild geese, Heron, Mallard, Moorhen

Rivers in Dijon• There aren’t any large river in Dijon but there

are three small ones. • * the Ouche, which is about 100 km long. It

flows through the city and the lake then ends up in a larger river, the Saône.

• * The Raisnes. Now it is totally covered and flows « underground ».

• River Suzon flows into the Ouche; It has been protected for its richness since 2011.

The situation in Burgundy

• * Only one stream out of 3 is sound.• In spite of the waste water plants and

numerous strategies to keep water clean, the situation does not improve.

Sources of pollution

• Toxic elements mainly come from– Industrial plants : chemical substances, heavy metals

such as lead, arsenic, mercury.

– Intensive agriculture : pesticides, fertilizers,

– What people throw : paper, cans, tarsh, platic, cigarette butts……(tourism)

– Daily products : detergents, soaps, drugs,

Consequences of pollution :

– On health : endocrine disruptors, cancers, impact on reproduction abilities,

– Strong impact on water biodiversity : impact on reproduction, eutrophication (reduction of the oxygen level in water), endangered species (as far as extinction). New non endemic species colonize the polluted spaces and take over natural species.
