Math Placement Test
• Only students with admission to UTP Stage I or who have a UTP I Math fee on their Letter of Offer are required to write the test. These students have been emailed.
• Students have up to three hours to complete online test.• A calculator is allowed for the exam.• The test consists of 48 questions of various difficulty to
assess current math skills.• Students who score low will need to take MATH 99
and MATH 101/103.• Students with some foundation skills in math will be
placed in MATH 101/103.• Students who do really well will need to write a
challenge test in Winnipeg (details to be emailed) to see if they have sufficient knowledge to enter MATH 1000 (university-level math) in their first term.
• Results will NOT appear on final ICM transcripts – it is simply used to place students in the appropriate math class.
• Deadline: April 1st, 2016

Student ID & Bus Passes
Student IDs
Student IDs can be obtained on the 4th floor of University Centre (in the
office across the hall from the elevators). Students must be enrolled in
courses and will need to bring their passport with them.
Bus Passes
ICM student bus passes can be purchased at Answers, located on the 1st
floor of University Centre. Students will only be able to purchase their bus
pass after they have received their student ID card
The cost of a monthly bus pass is C$70.85

If you are living on campus or are not planning to take the bus regularly,
you can also purchase 5 or 10 bus tickets for $2.30/ticket. This is more
economical than paying the cash fare ($2.65 exact change)

Textbooks
Textbooks are required in most UTPII ICM classes. The list of required textbooks will be posted on Student Portal the week of Orientation.
There are multiple locations to purchase textbooks on campus, including:

The used book store selling textbooks at discounted prices is located in the basement of the Helen Glass Building

It is advisable to pack:

Warm, waterproof spring/fall jacket (for -10 to +15C weather)
Clothing for summer (for +20 to +30C temperatures)
Cultural clothing or more formal wear for special occasions
Sportswear and running shoes for the Active Living Centre and swimming pool on campus (membership included in your fees) and other outdoor summer activities
Comfortable walking shoes
Note: Very warm winter clothing (for -15C and colder) can be purchased in Winnipeg in the fall, before the winter season arrives

Weather in Winnipeg
Winnipeg has a continental climate, with four
distinct seasons: winter, spring, summer, and fall.
Average temperatures of +26C in summer (June
to August) and -12C in winter (November to
March)
Students arriving in April can expect an average
daytime temperature of +10C and an average
overnight temperature of -2C, with occasional
precipitation. But the weather will get much
warmer as summer arrives! The average high
temperature in May is +19C

Household Items
Many students rent private suites or a room in a shared suite or house.
The majority of private rentals are unfurnished, but major appliances such as a refrigerator and stove are usually included, sometimes along with basic furniture
The majority of private rentals are unlikely to include kitchen utensils, bedding, towels, lamps, or laptops. A bed, couch, and other basic furniture may also not be included
When looking for accommodation, check what is included before you sign the rental agreement forms. If you need to purchase items when you arrive, check with ICM staff or other students on where to get the best prices
If you are bringing appliances with you to Canada, we recommend you update yourself with the Canadian customs regulations which can be found at the following website address: www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca and download the brochure entitled “RC4220: Entering Canada to Study or to Work”

International students are required to have valid medical insurance while living in Canada. The Province of Manitoba covers your insurance free of change while you remain a full-time student in Manitoba with a valid study permit. Details on how to obtain a health card will be provided at Orientation. This health insurance does not include vision, dental or prescription costs. Money can be wired from your home country to your Canadian bank account once it is open
You can also obtain a bank draft and bring it with you to Winnipeg. Be advised that Canadian banks can put long holds on deposits, sometimes up to 30 business days. Make sure to keep copies of all transactions for future reference
Sales Tax (PST & GST)

Driving in Manitoba
For students wishing to drive while in Winnipeg, we highly recommend taking driving lessons in Winnipeg, both in summer and in winter, as the driving conditions in Canada are entirely different than many overseas countries
