MY REGION : POWAI

Mumbai, the city of dreams, has gazillions of inspiring and awakening

features and two of them are graffiti and billboards. Some graffiti and billboards are also

found in and around Powai. While some are extremely eye pleasing,

others are abhorring to look at. The members of our group were inspired by this side of Mumbai and these pieces of art made an interesting topic for survey.

Q1.) ARE THE GRAFFITY AND BILLBOARDS IN YOUR REGION VISUAL PLEASING OR VISUAL POLLUTING?

Our region Powai has many graffiti and billboards. Some are visually pleasing while the others are visually polluting . We believe that graffiti should be done on personal property and not in the open or public places. In some cases the billboards also act as a means of promoting business.

In the Powai region we have some schools having billboards displayed around the schools.

As a part of our survey we interviewed some clients from the a local fitness gym which has some graffiti walls.

We have also interviewed the Principal and the Vice Principal of S.M. Shetty School and Junior College.

Visually pleasing or visually polluting? Interview and Research Survey: 1

According to the manager of the gym, the graffiti outside and inside the fitness gym are visually pleasing, but are visually polluting according to the clients of the gym and the other passengers passing by outside the gym.

we also have some graffiti near the Powai Plaza. These are visually pleasing according to the new generation but are visually polluting according to the older generation .

Visually pleasing or visually polluting? Interview and Research Survey: 2The billboards in our area are outside the S. M. Shetty International School and Junior College.

On interviewing the Principal of the school, it was found that they find the billboards are visually pleasing and promotes the school and its activities well enough. While on the other hand, the general public feels that they are visually polluting the region and the area looks congested and unpleasant because of them.

Are the authorities doing something about visual pollution ? Are there laws regarding the same?

No, the authorities are not taking any action for this. There are some sites where action is being taken. Some billboards have been removed from some areas, but in some places the owners are not interested in taking any action and prefer to remain indifferent. This is the reason why we still have illegal billboards and graffiti in our region.

Thank you
