Portland Secondary College is excited to share with families our eLearning Strategy: BYOD
Vision Statement Each student at Portland Secondary College learns to develop and demonstrate the knowledge, skills,
practices and attitudes necessary to be an engaged, robust 21st century citizen, capable of shaping our
future.
21st Century Skills Students in today’s schools enter a different world than that of their parents. “21st Century Skills” are
skills that build on traditional core subject areas and place higher demands on students, in areas
including:
Learning and thinking skills, such as problem-solving, creativity and collaboration;
Civic, cultural and global awareness;
Life skills, such as ethics and leadership;
Technology, information and media literacy.
By participating in a personalised computer program, students learn skills that will last a lifetime.
Technology by its nature tends to include problems that don’t have answers in the back of the book.
Learning to solve authentic problems when people are really depending on you is a true 21st Century
Skill.
Back in the classroom, this experience can empower students to reach beyond the walls of their school
and think beyond the next test. Reinforcing the belief that their voice and actions are important,
necessary and valued creates students who will go beyond a class assignment and become empowered,
global citizens of the 21st Century.
Why does my child need a computer?
Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) provides students and families with the latest technology, software and
support to afford our students the greatest opportunity to succeed in their schooling by allowing
greater engagement and involvement in their learning. Students will learn to develop and demonstrate
the knowledge, skills, practices and attitudes necessary to be an engaged and robust 21st century citizen
who is capable of shaping our future.
1:1 programs (a personal portable computer for each student) are part of an international move
towards individualising learning, which can increase independence and self-initiated learning in
students and extend their learning beyond the classroom. Students who have their own computers have
been found to take greater pride and ownership over the knowledge they create, with a flow-on effect
of extending formal learning communities to include parents or carers, siblings and other people
important in students’ lives.
BYOD
In preparation for 2019 and beyond, Portland Secondary College is continuing the implementation of
BYOD – its eLearning strategy. The Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program provides opportunities for
students to develop their ICT skills using familiar technology from home allowing families to decide the
best equipment. Our commitment to making Portland Secondary College an educational leader in ICT
has driven the adoption of the BYOD program.
What is BYOD?
In response to parent and student feedback on the 1:1 netbook program, Portland Secondary College
has expanded the options available for families that allow the use of a wider range of personal
technology. Advances in the way of curriculum is being delivered at the College, combined with growth
in ICT skills of both students and teachers, means we can move to this more contemporary model.
What does this mean for my family?
BYOD allows students to use a device chosen by them as a principle 1:1 device at school. It should be
noted that small mobile devices such as iPod, smart phones and eBook readers are not suitable as the
principle device; these however are permitted at school for personal use. Portland Secondary College
will provide access to the wireless network and the Internet for the principle 1:1 device but will not
provide any hardware support.
Cost to Families
BYOD has a cost for the family. Families can purchase from any vendor although we do have three
providers who all supply devices which meet the college’s recommended specifications.

Commonly asked questions
How much will the computer cost?
The cost of the BYOD device is completely up to families; the growing variety of device types and
increasing competition between vendors affords families’ the ability to source a device, which meets
the needs of their student and the family budget.
Will my child be protected when using the mobile computer online?
At school, students accessing the internet will be protected by eSmart practices; cyber-safety, in a
filtered environment and with teacher supervision. At home, parents are strongly encouraged to
supervise any internet use and consider setting screen time limits to avoid overuse. Further cyber safety
tips will be available from Portland Secondary College or at http://www.cybersmart.gov.au
Does my home need internet access?
This is up to families but is preferable, as from 2016 Portland Secondary College has been implementing
an online student management system called Compass. This will allow students and families to access
timetables and allow stronger communication between home and school.
Students will also be able to access the information they need online when they’re at school, and use
the software loaded on the mobile computing device at home. Even when not connected to the internet
the mobile computers are still very useful tools for learning. Of course, if you have internet access at
home, and you’re happy for your child to share it, you are welcome to do so. At home parents should
have clear guidelines around internet access on any device their child uses.
Are there rules about using the mobile computer?
You and your child will sign an acceptable use agreement with the school.
Portland Secondary College will discuss the expectations and responsibilities of owning a mobile
computer with the students, and the college will also communicate these expectations to you.
Expectations may include:
how the mobile computer should be used, including what material is regarded as inappropriate
for students to access;
having the mobile computer at school daily;
having the mobile computer fully charged and ready for use at school each day;
guidelines about what, and how much, extra software can be loaded onto the mobile computer,
including information about the need to observe copyright laws.
Families are encouraged to develop a similar set of rules at home.
Can my child bring a laptop, netbook or tablet that we have already purchased?
This is acceptable however; devices should meet the minimum specifications as outlined in this booklet.
Please be aware that tablets such as iPad do not meet the specifications and as a result cannot perform
some functions such as printing at school. If your child is using a tablet as their 1:1 device in 2017 it
must have a physical keyboard attachment with separate keys for A – Z and 0 – 9 and which physically move
when depressed.
What will happen if a mobile computer is lost, stolen of broken?
Parents are expected to cover costs associated with the repair of malicious or accidental damage. Please
refer to the device warranty or contact the supplier. Privately owned devices are the total responsibility
of families. Portland Secondary College will accept no responsibility for damage or loss of any private
mobile computing device brought into the college.
Will there still be desktop computers at Portland Secondary College?
Portland Secondary College will continue to invest in its ICT program through the provision of one
classroom lab of computers.
How does privacy work under BYOD?
Schools have the right to check contents of media and items brought onto school property. We reserve
the right to search lockers, bags and any digital content on electronic devices if required. Such items
may also be temporarily confiscated if used inappropriately or, if students are being investigated by
staff.
How do I get more information?
Portland Secondary College will keep you up-to-date about the mobile computer projects through its
website, Compass, newsletters, email and parent information evenings.
