Offshore Engineering
1. Flute System for SAIPEM 7000
Customer: De Pretto Industrie (Italy)
The JLT system of the SAIPEM 7000 has been equipped with a new Flute system for South
Stream Project. This device is being used during the lay operations: its main task is to avoid
any pipe over bend and kink effect at the JLT exit that could damage permanently the
pipeline. The system must be able to permit to operate the pipe during accidental
conditions (e.g. flooded pipe, abandon and recovery). The South Stream Flute system is
composed by six rollers levels numbered from R1 to FL4 respectively from the top to the
bottom level and by a steel rollers system at bottom level. Each roller level shall be able to
sustain the pipe load without damaging the pipe coating due to an excess of contact
stress. Our company has been in charge of designing the roller system.

2. Suction Unit
Customer: SAIPEM (Italy)
The Project: EPC2/EPC3 project intends to trench and backfill several sea lines in the Caspian Sea.
The Caspian Sea is in particular very shallow: water mean sea level (MSL) reaches the max depth of
about 4 m at more than 80 km from the shore. Additionally, this area is affected by storm surges
and can be reached by narrow barges. The method used consists first in the laying of pipelines
then post trenching and simultaneously back filling. The cut and dredged soil is collected by the
post trenching equipment and conveyed behind along the support barge to the back filling unit.
This latter unit will position the reclaimed soil back on the sea bottom to restore original seabed
level. Both post trenching and back filling equipment are hosted in the same barge namely post
trenching & back filling barge. Between the trenching vehicles and the back filling unit, operates
Suction Unit.
The Machine: Suction Unit is a subsea machine which aim is to remove the material of the seabed
dug up by the Trenching Sled (TRS). The vehicle slides along the pipeline towed by the barge. It
activates small trenching units and suction pumps in emergency conditions namely whenever the
trench depth does not comply with the prescribed value either due to accidental landslide or
following trench bed flatness out of range.

3. IHPU
Customer: Power Hydraulik (Italy)
The Machine: The IHPU is a subsea hydraulic power skid which operates rigidly connected
underneath a ROV. The main function of the IHPU is to provide hydraulic power in order to
control subsea tooling.
The IHPU has been designed as a part of the Main Repair Contractor Services system to
ensure a prompt intervention to repair the North Stream Pipelines in case of damage. The
two 48” North Stream pipelines are defined as the offshore system which exports the gas
from Portovaya Bay, near Vyborg, North of St. Petersburg (Russia), crossing the Gulf of
Finland and the Baltic Sea, up to a landfall area in Greifswald (Germany).
Fazzini Meccanica designed IHPU for Subsea Well Response Project, a non-profit joint
initiative of nine major oil and gas companies, aiming to develop solutions to respond
quickly and efficiently to future subsea well-control accidents. A part of SWRP is the OIS.
The Offset Installation System (OIS) is a tool designed to install a capping stack on a
blowout well without requiring direct vertical access. The OIS utilizes a large subsea
buoyant carrier structure to install the pre-designed capping stack over the blowout well.
During offshore operations the carrier functions are powered and controlled by means of
2 off ROVs. Each ROV has installed underneath an IHPU that is used as an electro-
hydraulic interface between ROV and Carrier.

4. Manipulator SAIPEM 7000 467
Customer: SAIPEM (Italy)
The FJC Handling System is composed by three manipulation arms mechanically mating
the clamps installed at the base of the J-Lay tower of the S7000 vessel. Its task is to provide
the positioning of three clamps onto the pipe joint to provide all the operatione necessary
to complete the joint manufacturing.
Each coating process consists of three working phases, performed respectively by each
clamp in the FJC plant:
• Blasting: to sandblast the bare pipe in a way to prepare metal surface for the
following coating material deposit
• Heat & Coat: to provide the heating and to properly apply the FBE anticorrosion
coating layer
• Injection molding: to apply the polypropylene layer and restore the pipe coating
on the joint
Each arm is mounted on a vertical rail able to support and move the arm and the clamp
along the vertical direction (parallel to the pipe axis). The manipulator system alternatively
moves the clamps from the resting position to the pipe to perform their tasks. The weights
of the three clamps vary from 2 to 3 tons each and the positioning precision required is +/-
5mm.

Battery Manufacturing Equipment
1. Double Side Pasting Machine
Client: Sovema (Italy)
This pasting machine is a real innovation in the sector because it pastes the grids on both
sides in one operation, and for that reason it has been patented by the constructor. The
project realization has been a great challenge because Fazzini Meccanica has been in
charge of the design of the machine and the prototype development working directly
with proper technicians in the customer production facility.
Technical characteristics: The machine pastes on both sides lead alloy grids up to 4 mm
thick. Two belts are fitted on the machine. The first polyester belt introduces the grids
under the hopper, the second, with very hard structure, is fitted in the finishing section to
assure a perfect calibration of the product. A couple of motorized rollers are fitted in the
central zone to ensure the paste delivery in the lower part of the plates.
A 7.5 Kw motor with inverter is fitted to move both the belts and the feeder. The new
conception hopper is divided in two parts, in the first the paste delivery is done, in the
second the excess paste is taken away and there is the thickness calibration of the plate.
The hopper hoisting is assured by a pneumatic cylinder. The finishing rubber rollers are
fitted with water nozzles that are fed with a solenoid valve. Once the machine is stopped
the water delivery is also closed. A sensor stops the machine if there are not grids in the
feeder or if there is a double grid in the feeder. The belt change is very easy and quick
and there is centralized greasing unit.
