STEENBERG

Pleas to restrict accessTIYESE JERANJI

@jeranji

Sharedon Park residents in Steenbergare worried about the increase in crimein their area and reckon this can easily

be avoided if the road reserves in Ivory Closeand Zircon Close are closed off.

Concerned residents say for over fiveyears they have pleaded with authorities toinstall fencing. Over the years they havewatched crime escalate and get out of handbecause the opening made it easy for peopleto access their area.

A couple of years ago the road reserve wascovered in reeds and grass, which preventedpeople from walking there. However, withtime, a visible footpath has been formedwhich has made it easy for the “wrong

crowd” to access the community. There have been a number of muggings

and even a murder has taken place. It is al-leged there was a rape last week.

Now residents say something has to bedone as a matter of urgency and are callingfor a brick wall that will stop people fromcoming into their area.

Sharedon Neighbourhood Watch says thecommunity has to stand up and demand thefencing, as they are concerned winter willbring an increase in crime.

“Cars and houses have been broken into.As the neighbourhood watch we want the ar-ea closed off. Criminals take advantage be-cause of the reeds. When they rob and runin there you will never see them again. Wehave had enough,” says Eric Bailey fromSharedon Park Neighbourhood Watch. “We

have been saying for a long time we wantedthis area closed as it will be easy to controlcrime from within. Those who are caught inour area will have nowhere to run to.”

A resident, who only identified herself asBelle, says the situation is out of hand.

“My house is the very last one and its easyfor a criminal to just attack us. We don’t feelsafe. If we could have a strong wall it willbe much better. People are robbed here allthe time and last week someone was raped. This spot is just not safe. It has made it easyfor people to access our area and crime is outof hand. The neighbourhood watch is tryingbut because of the reserve its really difficultfor them,” she says.

Bailey added when people walk in theopen space, they have to walk in numbersmaking them feel safe, but they are discour-

aging community members to use it.“Not even the police can patrol there. Peo-

ple must walk on the main road. Though it’squick and easy to access many placesthrough this hotspot, you’re making your-self an easy target. We are pleading with peo-ple to make it easy for us by not walkinghere.”

Ward councillor Marita Petersen says it’sa safety risk and it will be closed.

“I have always supported the closure, butthe problem was that no-one wanted to takeownership of the piece of land, whether it’sCity Parks or Transport for Cape Town. Thatwill be sorted out soon and the moment wehave a clear indication of who owns thatpiece of land, work will begin. There are toomany people accessing this area.”V Continued on page 2

Residents say the reserve isattracting the wrong crowdinto their area and they wanta wall that secures the areaand provides access control.

Brett Herron, Mayco member for trans-port, says they are aware of the proposedclosures.

“If the proposed closure is likely to im-pact on the broader community then theCity is obliged to conduct a public partici-pation process to ensure that all partieswho may be affected are afforded the op-portunity to comment or lodge their objec-tion.

In this instance there are well-definedpedestrian lines between Coniston Parkand Sharedon Park across the public openspace through Ivory Close and Zircon Cir-cle, says Herron, which are used by a largenumber of residents and will impact thebroader community.

“As such, the City will have to under-take a public participation process to de-termine whether there is wide support forthis proposal or not,” he says “Once thepublic participation process has been con-cluded, the City will be in a position totake a decision, pending the considerationof all comments and possible objections.”

The decision on when to initiate thepublic participation process is being dis-cussed, says Herron.

“The City is committed to conductingthe public participation process required. No timeline can be set at this stage as thedecision to permit the closure will be de-termined by the outcome of the public par-ticipation process.”

SLAVE ROUTE CHALLENGE

Honour heritagestep by stepEARL HAUPT

@EarlHaupt

The annual Slave Route Challenge whichsees runners being taken on a route that

encompasses an array of South Africa’smost historical sites, has become a favour-ite on the calendar of novice and elite run-ners alike.

The race, taking place on Mother’s Day(Sunday 8 May), howev-er has a much deeperand more personalmeaning, says eventspokesperson FatimaAllie.

Having been born inthe Bo-Kaap, Allie wasraised in Walmer Es-tate and went to schoolin District Six and is aself-professed defen-dant of the Cape Ma-lays.

“When it comes to theSlave Route Challengeitself, we look at our an-cestors who came fromIndonesia, Java andMalaysia. They were the ones who camewith all the skill. They were the builders. So my ancestors were not slaves per sé, myancestors were exiled from Indonesia to theCape,” says Allie.

She goes on to say that because the slaveswere forced to work and interact with otherlabourers brought to the area, that is howall the cultures started to mix and that asa result started to weave the fabric whichmeshes South Africa’s rich history. “If youlook around, the oldest standing building is

the Castle of Good Hope. The Castle of GoodHope was built by the slaves. You look atCity Hall and the Grand Parade, all of theseiconic and old places and structures in CapeTown were all built by the slaves. Then yourealise that there are so many historicalsites throughout Cape Town that people didnot even know of,” adds Allie.

Besides the historical aspect the race af-fords itself to, Allie says that there is an

amazing atmosphere of to-getherness on race day.

“It is the spirit of Ubuntuthat you feel. You will see agrandmother who has neverever walked (in an event) inher entire life. She is nowwalking the 5km with hergrandchildren because herdaughter and her husbandare going to be running the10km while their teenager isrunning the 21km, so this isa family event.”

Allie reminded those whostill wish to participate inthe 21km race need to enteronline no later than Sunday24 April. She confirmed that

there will still be opportunities to enter theother three events (5km fun run/walk,10km run and 10km big walk) on Sunday 1May as well as Friday 6 and Saturday 7 Mayat Cape Town’s City Hall. “Come and ex-plore this whole journey of the Slave RouteChallenge where you run through the Cas-tle, District Six, and Gardens, through theBo-Kaap and the Sea Point area and backonto the Grand Parade where you can seethe beauty of Cape Town.”V To enter visit www.iamrunningfor.co.za

Fatima Allie channels the spirit ofUbuntu when speaking about andwhile helping to organise theSlave Route Challenge.

The prestigious International Hans GaborBelvedere Singing Competition will beheld in Cape Town this year, making it thefirst time the competition has been hostedoutside Europe.

Dreaming of the OlympicsTIYESE JERANJI

@jeranji

“Giving up on yourself is not an option;striving for success is the only way to

a better and happy life.”These are the words that have kept teen

athlete Carla Johnson (18) from Retreat mo-tivated.

In spite of her challenges and lack of finan-cial means at times, it never crosses hermind to stop what she really loves doing.Johnson is the best in running, long jumpand heptathlon and she has medals to showfor it.

However, at times she struggles to makeends meet and misses competitions becauseshe doesn’t have money.

Her love for athletics started when shewas eight years old, influenced by brotherswho also love sports.

She has attained her Western Provincecolours and has represented the province atdifferent national competitions.

WhirlwindWhen she takes to the track, she runs like

a whirlwind. Her success on the track hasearnedhernational colours and theopportu-nity to represent the country in Botswana,China and the USA.

Johnson says this is her life.“I really enjoy it. Sport is my passion; I re-

ally love doing it and I just can’t imagine my-self doing anything else. This is what I wantto do all the time. It completes me and givesme so much joy,” she says.

Taking fromher rolemodels Sonja vanderMerwe and Usain Bolt, she is determined tobe the best in whatever she does. Now sheis eyeing the 2020 Olympics and says takingpart in that will be a dream come true.

“I’m training so hard. I want to be part ofthe team so that I can show the world wantI can do. I want to compete at the highest lev-el of sport. This is what I really love and go-ing to the 2020 Olympics will be a topachievement for me.”

Raised by a single mother, she says some-times she misses sporting events becauseher mother simply cannot afford it.

Her wish is to have a sponsor who willhelp her with the sporting gear that sheneeds to take part in sports.

Theyhave beenknocking on several doorsfor support, but nothing has come up for heryet.

Never give upHowever, she says that it will not stop her

from doing what really completes her.“My mother struggles a lot, but she tries

to make ends meet. It really breaks my heartwhen I have to miss a competition, but Iknow she would have tried. I’m appealing topeople to sponsor me so that I won’t have tomiss any more competitions. At times it be-comes difficult to even get money for trans-port, but my mother has always tried tomake sure that I don’t miss any competi-tion,” she says.

Her mother, Berenice, says Carla reallyloves what she does, though it hasn’t beeneasy for them and they haven’t given up.

“When she has tournaments coming up Ido fundraising and even sell stuff so that shecan at least have pocket money. It reallypains me a lot to see the great potential thatshe has and I wouldn’t want her to miss onreaching the stars because I can’t afford it.We struggle to get sponsorships and we hopethat one day something will come her way.She is very passionate about this, so I sup-port her all the time.”

Carla Johnson (18) is passionate about sports and she is appealing for a good Samaritan tosponsor her so that she doesn’t miss any more competitions PHOTO: TIYESE JERANJI

Growing oldtogether brings joyTIYESE JERANJI

@jeranji

Instead of sitting home doing nothing, sen-iors from Retreat have been meeting once

a month and they say it was the best deci-sion they have ever made.

Meeting on every second Tuesday of ev-ery month these pensioners sit together, talk and do various exercises to keep themhealthy. To seal off the day they also sharesomething to eat together.

Started in 2006, St Andrews Senior Clubmembers say they have a lot to be gratefulfor. Once in a while they go out for roadtrips together and they celebrate each oth-er’s birthdays.

Whatever outings and activities they ar-range, themembers finance from their ownpockets. They take money from their pen-sion for contributions and that has keptthem going for years.

Iris Hermanus, the chairperson of theclub, says it was really boring to sit at homeand do nothing, so they decided to approachtheir church to see if they could use the hallfor their meeting.

Currently there are 20 members, agedfrom 60 to 89 years, whomeet from 10:00 un-til 13:00.

Recently they took part in the Golden

GamesatGreenpoint Stadiumandwon sev-en medals. These seniors admit that coming together

and exercising keeps diseases at bay.“We are fit. No disease can attack us be-

cause we keep busy by exercising. We playgames with other elderly people and it real-ly makes us feel good. We enjoy being witheach other,” says Hermanus.Francis August, another member of the

club, says what she enjoys most is the com-pany and getting to know each other.

“We enjoy each other’s company. We loveit when you’re together. Being alone athome was very boring, but now we havesomething to look forward to.“We go to different places and do different

things. We learn from each other. Peoplehave different ways of doing things, sowhen we are here we learn from one anoth-er. Above all we pray for each other. We arevery thankful for the road that we havewalked, so coming here to meet each othermakes us happy. It’s a joy tomeet. We reallywant tomeetmore butwe can’t afford it andwe don’t have sponsors. We work out of ourown money so we can only meet once amonth,” she says.Apart from getting together they also vis-

it other senior clubs in the area to talk anddo different things.

Former District Six residents are tired ofpromises and want action in their quest

WorkingCommittee (D6WC), held on Satur-day at theBlackpool Sports Club in Salt Riv-er, the hall was packedwith people fromdif-ferent historically disadvantaged commu-nities.They came to hear how urban restitution

should be approached and implemented byall the relevant stakeholders in a holisticfashion, starting with the healing process. Some of the important guest speakers in-

cluded Diana Oliver from the RestitutionFoundation, Amelia September and MarioWanza of theManenberg People’s Forum aswell as local councillor Achmat Williams.Shahied Ajam, chairperson of the organi-

with regard to the Good Hope Centre, Ajamsaid.“We will legally oppose the City of Cape

state-owned land within the city peripheryfor those who cannot be accommodated inDistrict Six.“Urbanisation is rapidly increasing and

everybody has a right to the city especiallythose who were previously evicted and dis-possessed during the apartheid era.“Integration in the inner-city space is par-

Taking from his role model Pablo Picasso,Robin Daniels (48) from Retreat says art

is his respiration; without it he can’tbreathe.

The father of two has turned his garageinto what he calls his area of play and work.He does different paintings inspired byfriends, people he meets and family.

He specialises in oil-based paintings andlino cuts. Daniels is a self-taught artist andis very grateful to have come across print-making greats like Patrick and Sydney Ho-lo, as well as the late Kweti Nzube, whotaught him the ropes and how he couldmake a living out of it.

Even more so they taught him how tomake his work beautiful and balance all thecolours perfectly for a nice picture. He alsospent some time with Billy Mandini.

His first break into the industry was whenone of his sculptures was selected for the“Made in Wood” exhibition at the South Af-rican Gallery in 1992. In 2003 he was invitedto exhibit jazz-themed lino cuts at the NorthSea Jazz festival and since then he has neverlooked back.

He started painting at a very young ageand has exhibited works in various galler-ies in Cape Town. Some of these include Le-onardo Da Vinci, Infant Art, Artvark andState of the Art, to mention just a few.

Though art has always has been a passionof his, he had to make a strong decision todo it full-time. “Back then our parents didn’tsee art as something that you could makea living out of. They told me to get a job. Thiswas what I really wanted to do, but I had togo work.”

Daniels worked at a factory as a fork-liftoperator. He mostly worked night shift sothat during the day he could have time todo his art – even if it was just for a few hours.

He didn’t stay there for long as he foundit very boring, and became a textile design-er. But that was not his thing either and hedecided to call it quits to focus on visualarts.

“This is my life. Everything else didn’t

complete me. I felt empty. When I focus onmy painting I’m very happy. I enjoy whatI do. I do things at my own pace and I believein giving people quality work. I take mytime and each time I sit in my studio to workI can’t put the feeling into words. I reallylove what I do,” he says.

Despite being an established artist, hesays he still faces some challenges with mar-keting and getting his work out there.

“Marketing is a challenge. Most artistswork from home and no-one really knowsabout them. Yes, my work can be found ingalleries, but I want to reach a lot of people.Despite that, I keep doing what I love. I know

one day I will get a break.”On Thursdays he looks forward to teach-

ing art to children.“I love introducing art to children. So I

teach kids at a nearby school. That is oneof the things that keeps me going – knowingthat I’m sharing my knowledge with chil-dren. It makes me happy. It’s very easy forme to do it because I love what I do. I strong-ly fee that art has its place in alleviatingsome of the social ills affecting the youth indisadvantaged communities that’s why Itake time to introduce art to children.”

His wish is to exhibit his work in galleriesin New York.

Local artist shares hislove with the youth

Robert Daniels says his latest painting was inspired by Easter and the betrayal that Jesuswent through. This is something that happens in the day-to-day lives where friends betrayeach other. That is why he painted this – to show the betrayal that happens in life.

LEGAL TALK WITH DENZIL

Following instructionOver the years I have been askedmany times whether an employercan dismiss an employee, if theemployee refuses to obey an in-struction that falls outside oftheir job description?

This has always been a trickyquestion as the employee’s job de-scription is not always clearlyand precisely defined in their em-ployment contracts.

It is a well-known fact that em-ployees have a duty to act in goodfaith at the workplace, includingthe duty of employees to be subor-dinate and to comply with the in-structions of the employer in re-gard to their duties and work.

Employers have, however, de-veloped job descriptions in orderto allocate certain responsibili-ties to certain employees and tocreate a framework to promote ef-ficiencies and to ensure accounta-bility. The question remains, towhat extent does this impact anemployee’s refusal to performcertain tasks which fall outsidethe scope of their job description?

In Noosi vs Exxaro Matla Coal(June 2015), the Labour Court ad-dressed the issue of insubordina-tion and confirmed an importantlegal principle in regard thereto.

The case involved an electri-cian who had refused to obey theinstructions of the senior fore-man – to cease the operation of aconveyor belt which was operat-ing in dangerous conditions. Theemployee was charged with, interalia, gross insubordination anddismissed. He referred the matterto the CCMA, where the commis-

sioner found that the employeracted appropriately and as a re-sult the dismissal was fair. Theemployee then took the matter onreview where the Labour Courtfound that the test for insubordi-nation is not whether the instruc-tions fall within the job descrip-tion of the employee, but ratherwhether the instructions werereasonable and lawful. The courtheld and supported the position.

Should it be shown that the in-struction was unlawful, it wouldbe the end of the inquiry. If it isfound that the instruction waslawful, the expectation is that theemployee, to whom such instruc-tion was issued, should have com-plied. It will have little, if any, todo with whether the instructionis related to the employee’s job de-scription because it will never bea justification for an employee torefuse lawful instructions merelybecause the instructions are nothis or her direct functions.

This has a two-fold lesson forboth the employer and employee:

. Employers should regularlyensure their employees’ job de-scriptions are accurate.

. Employees still have an over-riding duty of good faith to theiremployers, whether the instruc-tion falls within their job descrip-tion or not, and a failure to com-ply with instructions which arereasonable and lawful may be suf-ficient grounds for dismissal.V This column was contributed by DenzilJacobs, an admitted advocate with ex-pertise in commercial law. LETTERS

Love isn’t divisionI would like to comment onDallas Broughton’s letter inPeople’s Post of 3 April(“No mercy for those whorape, murder”).

It is hard to fathom thatMr Broughton believes abetter world can comeabout when what heproposes is but replacingone evil with another.Creating even more divi-sion in society than therealready is can only contrib-ute to more of the sameproblems, no solutions.

I believe that it is onlywhen I can let go of my

fear and take a genuineinterest in another fellowhuman being that changecan possibly come about. To condemn another’sactions is to not under-stand. Love does not divide.Trust begets trust. I, too,can fail and go astray. Thepotential for evil is also inme.

May Mr Broughton oneday find that where loverules the world is changed, one small but significantmoment at a time.

love and life is. I believe I’m the friend,moth-er and wife that I am today all because sheis my mother.”Michelle: “My mom was my biggest sup-

where I am today because of her: she is astrong, powerful, intelligent woman who re-spects and loves God. She prays for her chil-dren more than herself. She’s more than amother; she’s my best friend. Angling for cysticfibrosis awarenessLocal anglers are going fishing for a good

cause. The annual Miggie Challenge is a one of

a kind freshwater angling competition thataims to promote cystic fibrosis awarenessand organ donation. Each year, a benefici-ary livingwith cystic fibrosis is chosen, andall funds raised during the event are donat-ed.Cystic fibrosis is a life-threatening genet-

ic disease that causes persistent lung infec-tions and progressively limits the ability tobreathe. In the lungs, the mucus clogs theairways and traps bacteria leading to infec-tions, extensive lung damage and eventual-ly respiratory failure. In the pancreas, themucus prevents the release of digestive en-zymes that allow the body to break downfood and absorb vital nutrients. There iscurrently no cure for cystic fibrosis. The Miggie Challenge, which takes place

on Wednesday 27 April, was started in 2014as a fun event to celebrate the 21st birthdayof Stefan “Miggie” King, a well-loved anglerin the fishing world who suffered from cys-

tic fibrosis, explains Cape Town AnglingClub spokesperson Kalin Oelofse.King passed away two months after the

eventwas founded. The clubhas sincemadethe competition an annual event to honourthe life and positive spirit of Stefan King. The Miggie Challenge is a one of a kind

fishing event with back-to-front rules andits very own fancy-dress theme. The onlyrule of the day is to have fun. Anglers areencouraged to break the rules, steal eachother’s fish and fish however they please.Donated prizes are handed out at the end

of theday for categories suchas the smallestfish and the best dressed. There are plentyof delicious meals for sale on the day andthe atmosphere is very festive. Many an-glers and families attend the Miggie Chal-lenge and the fun filled day is enjoyed byall.V To take part in the Miggie Challenge or to be a spon-sor at the event, please feel free to contact the CapeTown Angling Club at capetownangling-club@gmail.com. Visit the Miggie Challenge Facebookpage at www.facebook.com/themiggiechallenge.

Rob Henderson shows off his sense of humour at the last Miggie Challenge. The event raisesfunds and awareness for Cystic fibrosis patients.

Wear South African, an initiative of theSouthern African Clothing and Textile

Workers Union (SACTWU), continues togather momentum. They are in their third year and are send-

ing out a strong call to encourage all SouthAfricans to get behind the movement andbecome a Local Label lover. The Wear South African campaign was

designed to promote the local design andmanufacturing sector. The campaign encourages South Afri-

cans to check the labels of the fashion itemsthey purchase in order to rekindle anawareness and appreciation for all thingscreated in South Africa by South Africans. This includes bags, shoes, jewellery andmillinery as well as inner and outer wear.Spreading the word about wearing South

African brands, they have been to the BlueRoute Mall in Tokai and the V&A Water-front.On Saturday they will be at Tyger Valley

Shopping Centre. The project co-ordinator for the Cape

Town Fashion Festival (CTFF) and WearSA, Wayne van der Rheede, says there’s awealth of beautifully made options alreadyavailable in stores and online.“With this campaign we just want to en-

courage more people to look at the labelsthey buy and then share their love for localwith as many people as they can.“In this way, we are looking to spread the

message and ignite a passion for local, which in turncancontinue the renewedandsustained growth of our own clothing de-sign and manufacturing sector.”

To make this a reality, Wear South Afri-can suggests everyone does a wardrobe au-dit, checking just howmany of their clothesare actually made in South Africa.People are encouraged to post pictures of

their favourite, funkiest, weirdest, mostmemorable local label pieces via social me-dia – Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.Join the movement by following @Wear-

Steenberg shinesin charity driveThe Steenberg Golf Club’s Ladies section

has set a solid benchmark at the startof this year’s club competitions for the

Sanlam Cancer Challenge as they raisedR19 000 in the effort to support the CancerAssociation of South Africa (Cansa).

The Sanlam Cancer Challenge is South Af-rican golf’s biggest charity drive in the fightagainst cancer and has teed off its 23rd yearat golf clubs around the country, with thou-sands of amateur golfers joining together totry and beat the over R3.5m raised last year.

From March to July, amateur golfersaround South Africa will take part in theirlocal golf club’s Sanlam Cancer Challengegolf dayswith the double aimof raisingmon-ey for CANSA as well as trying to qualify fortheir respective regional finals.

The winners of the regional finals, whichwill be played from July to August, will thenqualify for the National Finals to be playedon both the Gary Player Country Club andLost City Golf Club courses at Sun City from9 to 2 October.

And in this shared spirit of being proact-ive in the battle against cancer, 48 golfersfrom the Steenberg Ladies section did theirbit to work together as “Wealthsmiths” forthe greater good of their community.

“The Sanlam Cancer Challenge is a popu-

lar event on the Steenberg Ladies golf calen-dar. There has always been overwhelmingsupport of this fundraising initiative atSteenberg as many of our members are can-cer survivors whilst others have lost friendsand family members to this illness,” said DiBrooks, Steenberg Ladies committee mem-ber.

“The Sanlam Cancer Challenge repre-sents not only an opportunity to raise fundsfor a worthy cause but also for our membersto compete regionally and nationally. Steen-berg members have historically done well inthe Regional Finals and last year two of ourmembers, Peter Terrblanche and Gwen Or-tlepp, qualified for the finals, with Gwen fin-ishing second in the A Division nationally. It was a fantastic opportunity for these play-ers to play at Sun City and to meet a numberof interesting players from around the coun-try.”

The purpose of the Sanlam Cancer Chal-lenge is to raise funds and awareness annu-ally for the fight against cancer. In 2015, atotal of 35 863 golfers played in 780 club com-petitions held around the country in supportof CANSA’s prevention programmes and pa-tient care support throughout the year.V For more information visit www.sanlamcancerchal-lenge.co.za
