  • and closing canals without insight

will have an adverse impact on

    stormwater flow.

    Prior experience has shown

that the use of fences is also not a

    long-term solution as these are

    vandalised within days.

    Maintenance then becomes an

    even bigger issue and ultimately

unsustainable in terms of our lim-

    ited budget.

V Readers who witness people dumping

waste in the canal should report this crime

    to the City on 0860 103 089.

    esidents of Beethoven Street

in Steenberg say they want a

    nearby canal fenced off be-

    cause its a safety risk.

    They say crimes like robberies

    andmurder happen there and they

want it closed off before the crime

    gets out of hand.

    Theyhave sent a petition toward

    councillor Marita Petersen last

year, but nothing was done. They

threatened to close it off them-

    selves, but they claim Petersen

said she would call on the City of

Cape Towns Metro Police to break

    downwhatever theyplanned touse

    to close it off.

    The frustrated residents say

    they want something done about

    the canal.

A resident, who refused to be

named, says the canal is very dan-

    gerous.

Walking there is a risk. You just

dont know if you will make it to

the other side alive. People get

    robbed, children going to school

are targeted there. There is a lot of

loitering that I just dont under-

stand. Some people sit there and

smoke all day. There are drug deal-

ings going on there. A lot happens

there and its making us feel very

unsafe. Walking there after 21:00 is

    putting your life in danger.

The canal runs from Prince Ge-

orge Drive and three more roads

into their area but they say they

    are more concerned about their

    section.

We are the people who stay

close to it and we witness every-

thing that happens there. We have

been calling them to come up with

a solution but there is nothing

    forthcoming.

    BrettHerron,Maycomember for

    transport, says the City receives

    regular requests to close canals

due to a number of reasons, mainly

    dumping.

    The City, however, can rarely

close off canals as these are the ar-

    teries of our stormwater network,

    Beethoven Street residents

    want the canal next to

    them fenced off because

they allege its a safety risk.

    HAVE YOU BEEN INJURED?

If you have been seriously injured in a

    motor vehicle accident, train accident,

police shooting or due to medical

negligence, you may have a claim against

    a government department for

    compensation.

If you have put in a claim directly with the

Road Accident Fund without using an

attorney and feel that you have been

underpaid or are dissatisfied with their

service, we may be able to assist you.

We are personal injury attorneys, who

    specialise in serious injuries.

We are prepared to work on a no win

    Donations boost firefighters

    Thevolunteer firefighters of theCity ofCape

    Towns Disaster Risk Management have

bought seven new water trailers a pur-

chase made possible by residents and busi-

nesses who donated in a radio-thon spear-

headed by Primedia Broadcasting in the aft-

ermath of last years fires in the South

    Peninsula. The volunteers received just

over R400 000 of the funds raised and used

this donation to buy the fire skid units.

The new fire skid units are fully equipped

trailers, each fitted with a 650F water tank.

The trailers also boast a twin-stage centrifu-

gal pump, an aluminium locker for equip-

ment, a 30m dragline hose with nozzle and

120m of canvas hose and a nozzle. The water

tank and hoses can easily be transferred to

a bakkie and, given that they are more com-

pact, the units can get into confined areas

like informal settlements to fight fires more

easily, explains JP Smith, Mayco member

    for safety and security.

I would like to thank the residents and

corporate sponsors for their donation. The

funds raised have been used to procure

    much-needed equipment which will en-

hance the firefighting efforts of our volun-

teers. This equipment can also be used in in-

stances of flooding, to clear waterlogged are-

    as, he says.

We have built a formidable volunteer

base in the City of Cape Town over the years

and we appreciate each and every gesture to

help equip these men and women who dedi-

cate their time and skills so selflessly in ser-

    vice of their fellow residents.

Mayco member for safety and security, and Juanita Bloemetj of Primedia Broadcasting.

    Railway property

    is off limits

hile travelling by train is still a trans-

    port priority formanyacross thePenin-

sula it is also a source of pleasure, offering

trips to the seaside and other interesting pla-

    ces.

    Socialmediahavealso seen the rise inpeo-

ple using railway property, disused train

stations and tracks as backdrops for wed-

ding and matric dance shoots, but is this le-

    gal?

    There aremany areaswhere communities

live next to tracks and invade these areas.

    Childrenbreak through fences andplaynext

to tracks, raising concerns about their safe-

    ty.

    Madelein Williams, spokesperson of the

Railway Safety Regulator, gives some in-

sight into what you can and cannot do on

    railway property.

She explains that railwayreserves are are-

as that are exclusively for train operations.

There are serious consequences for peo-

ple who illegally enter these reserves, be-

cause it is private property, she says.

As such, any person can be criminally

charged for trespassing and the regulations

empower operators to institute eviction pro-

ceedings against any unlawful occupiers of

the railway reserve or a land adjacent to the

railway reserve. The same applies to people

using it for recreational purposes, like photo

    shoots or filming.

It is the primary responsibility of the op-

erator to protect its assets, and ensure that

necessary legal action is taken against any

    trespassers.

This responsibility of the operator is

clearly reflected in the National Railway

    SafetyRegulatorAct. Section 5of theAct pla-

ces the primary responsibility of ensuring

safe railway operations squarely on the

    shoulders of the operator.

In our attempt to address challengeswith

railway reserves, we have developed two

    sets of regulations.

The rail reserve regulations will oblige

railway operators to erect fences, build

walls and bridges and put up signs to pre-

vent any encroachment on the railway re-

    serve.

In addition to these regulations on railway

reserves, Williams says, the Railway Safety

    Regulatorhasdeveloped regulations for rail-

way security, which will require operators

to develop, implement and maintain a plan

to tackle all securitymatters and challenges.

The regulation will require operators to

deploy security personnel or electronic devi-

ces to monitor the perimeter of the railway

reserve fence or wall in built-up areas.

She also stresses the importance of pas-

    sengers understanding railway safety.

Themost important safety aspect or chal-

lenge is the issue of people being struck by

    trains, she says.

Last year a total of 643 peoplewere struck

by trains. This is followed by electrocution

and crime that takes place within the re-

serves, such as cable theft. The negative im-

plications of such criminal activities to our

    economy are incalculable.

The Regulator was established to oversee

    and promote safe railway operations

    through appropriate support, monitoring

    and enforcement.

An annual national school competition that

    encourages recycling has introduced new

rules for schools to win cash prizes.

Collect-a-Can, the can recovery and recy-

cling organisation, announced that it has

changed the rules to encourage schools to

make a longer lasting and positive impact

    on the environment.

    The annual competition rewards schools

for collecting used cans. The more cans col-

lected by a school, the higher its chances of

winning a share of R240 000 in prizes.

Over and above the prize money that a

school can win, it is also paid per kilogram

    of steel or aluminium cans.

This year, instead of qualifying for

monthly prizes, schools will work towards

a silver, gold or platinum status, based on

the amount of cans they collected. Schools

will move up to the next status as soon as

they have collected the minimum amount

of cans required, says Zimasa Velaphi,

    spokesperson of Collect-a-Can.

Each time a school moves to the next sta-

tus, it will be given R1000. Only schools that

reach the top platinum status will qualify

    for the national prizes.

From this year onwards, schools can en-

ter the competitionany time from thebegin-

ning of the year until the last day in Octo-

ber, but the sooner they enter the better.

The competition is also restricted to educa-

tional institutions only, such as primary or

high schools, crches, boy scouts and girl

    guides, adds Velaphi.

Schools can get their entry forms on

    www.collectacan.co.za.

We believe that with these new statuses,

schools will be encouraged to collect even

more cans. Ultimately, this will aid in hav-

ing a longer lasting and positive impact on

    our environment, says Velaphi.

V For more information about the competition, call

    Collect-a-Cans head office on 011 466 2939, visit

    LAVENDER HILL

    Local teaches

    moves overseas

    TIYESE JERANJI

    @jeranji

    S

tefan Benting (24) from Lavender Hill

has been invited by the city of Stock-

holm and B-Girl Daisy in Sweden to

teach and participate in a cultural ex-

    change.Hewill spendmore thanamonth

in Sweden sharing his skills and learn-

ing from the Swedes in turn.

    Benting left for Sweden yesterday.

Though its his second time going to Swe-

denhe sayshe is nervous, butmore excit-

ed about seeing his friends. Above all, he

looks forward to the workshops he will

be doing aswell as the cultural exchange.

Benting says he is over themoon about

    this new opportunity.

Its a big thing forme. Im looking for-

ward to teaching them different dance

    moves ... breakdancing, gumboot dance

among other things. My strongest mes-

sage to them will be not to see the differ-

ence but see how far we have come and

the similarities brought by all the dance

    moves.

His mentor Emile YX? says he is al-

    ways gladwhen thepeopleheworkswith

    get such opportunities.

Im very excited. Its about going

there to learn how they do things and he

will come teach others here as well. He

will share what he learns with the other

    generation.

He is going there and it will be winter

    hewill get the shockexperienceofhis life

but he will learn, Emile jokes.

Eleven years ago Benting saw a per-

formance of Black Noise at Lavender

High School, when he was invited by

Emile to attenda free breakdancing class

at the Cape Flats Developmental Associ-

    ation (Cafda).

He remained dedicated to his passion.

After completing his matric and being

unable to study further, he asked Emile

if he could work for the Heal the Hood

    project.

Five years ago, Emile started his sec-

    ondHeal theHoodpractical school called

    MixedMense.He invited fouryoungmen

fromLavender Hill to learn from the dai-

ly struggle of being an artist in Cape

    Town.

Emile first taught them how to teach

what he had taught them. He then en-

couraged them towrite their own stories

and created opportunities for them to

record their songs, create a video, partic-

ipate in a plays like Mixing It Up, Ons

Bou, Break and Stomp. They also got to

    tourwithEmile toKhoisan communities

    throughout South Africa.

Two years ago they formed part of the

    Black Noise performance collective that

was staged in the Kennedy Centre in

    Washington DC.

TheHeal the Hood project just secured

funding from Unga Ornar (young ea-

gles) of Sweden for the next four years.

This will ensure that Benting will have

employment for the next four years after

    returning from Sweden.

Heal the Hood will focus on passing on

    its participants knowledge, with the

help of Benting and other facilitators, to

    learners.

V Schools interested in participating in project

create can contact the Heal the Hood Office on

    021 706 0481 or [email protected].

The Athlone committee of the Cancer Asso-

ciation of South Africas (Cansa) will be

hosting its ninth annual Relay for Life at the

Vygieskraal Stadium on Friday 18 March

from 18:00. It concludes the next day at 06:00.

Relay teams, caregivers and cancer survi-

    vors,whoarehonorary guests,will takepart

    in the relay.

Visitors are also welcome to attend the re-

lay from 17:00 to midnight. The entrance fee

for adults is R30 each and children under the

age of 12 pay R20 each.

The relay is one of Cansas main fundrais-

ing events. Teams take to the track for 12

hours to identifywith the suffering of cancer

patients and learn that cancer never

    sleeps.

Cansa is a non-profit organisation which

    spreads awareness about cancer throughout

South Africa by promoting health and edu-

    cation programmes.

Registration of teams takes place at the

team captains meetings, which are held at

    SurreyEstatePrimarySchool inPlutoRoad,

    SurreyEstate every Saturdaymorning. Reg-

istration opens at 10:30, while the captains

    meeting starts at 11:00.

The cost per team isR650with amaximum

number of 15 people per team. A deposit of

R150 will secure a spot for a team.

We are also encouraging teams to raise

additional funds of R1000 if possible, says

Mandy Adams, a volunteer and secretary of

    Cansa Relay for Life Athlone.

The registration fee for a team of 15 people

comes to R44 per person. Therefore, in order

for a team to raise an extra R1000, each of

the 15 team members can donate R66 along

with their R44 registration fee each. Cansa,

however, reiterates that the fundraising as-

pect of the event is voluntary.

The event is limited to 150 teams. There

are currently 95 teams registered for the

event, with 170 cancer survivers registered

    in these teams.

Children are welcome. Children over the

age of five years will have to be registered

as part of a team, while children younger

than fivearenot required topay the registra-

    tion fee.

The committee is trying to raise a total of

R300 000, with the current pool sitting at

    R128 000.

As a fully sponsored event we rely on the

goodwill of sponsors and are always looking

for organisations willing to partner with us.

We have witnessed the growth of the re-

lay over time, so much so that for 2014 we

received two awards for the most teams reg-

istered and the most survivors at a relay.

This success would not have been possible

without the assistance of our partners and

sponsors who have played a vital role, Ad-

    ams says.

ahla the cat from Diep River that was

allegedly shot by a neighbour in a com-

plexs communal garden will have to live

with a pellet in her body.

    Wayne Cleinwerck, Nahlas owner, says

a veterinarian told him that removing it

would cause her more damage, so they

chose to rather leave it in her as its not in-

    terfering with anything.

Nahla was allegedly shot by a neighbour,

Antonie Gericke, with a high pressure air

rifle on 29 January. He claimed he shot the

cat as it was upsetting his birds in the gar-

    den.

Gericke and he is now facing charges of

animal cruelty. He made his second court

    appearance atWynbergMagistrates Court

last Tuesday. The case was postponed to 1

April to allow for further investigation.

Animal lovers came to court in their

numbers, most of them dressed in black in

    solidarity to protest animal cruelty.

June Bradbury of the Cat Trapping Asso-

ciation says she wasnt happy about the

postponement. I dont know whether its

a good thing or a bad thing that the case

was postponed again. All wewant is justice

for the cat. As it is [Nahla] is still struggling

as the bullet is stuck in her body anything

can happen. Since this incident the cat has

been very frustrated, traumatised and the

injury is just making things worse. She

now has to go around with a collar thing

on the neck, which is very uncomfortable.

All we want is for something to be done as

animal cruelty is not acceptable, she says.

After Nahla was shot she went missing

for days before she was found in a school

kitchen in Diep River (Eight lives left for

    Nahla, Peoples Post, 16 February).

After being found she was taken to a vet

and had to undergo an operation. Nahla

had a torn ligament. The pellet still in her

body lies very close to her heart.

Cleinwerck says Nahla is at home and is

    recovering well.

She went for the operation and every-

thing went well. The vet decided to leave

the pellet bullet in because removing it

would cause more harm. She has been un-

der a lot of stress, so she lost so much

weight, but she is recovering. She has been

sick as well but we were told that its nor-

mal following the severe stress and trauma

that she has been under so the immune sys-

tem was down. She is limping a little and

we are glad that now she is starting to bond

again with the other cat that was at home.

When she came back home it was a little

awkward as theywere staring at each other

but now they are getting [closer] to each

    other.

    henmembers of the polices Operation

Combat were about to leave the scene

of an arrest in Lavender Hill last week they

were attacked bymembers of the public and

    gang members.

Themembers arrested a 16-year-old in El-

tister Road last Wednesday at about 19:20

for the possession of two mandrax half tab-

lets. The mandrax had been found in a roll

of bank notes to the value of R880.

The police members were stoned by the

angry crowd. The area is known as a Fast

    Guns gang area.

The crowd started to burn tyres and

threw stones at all cars that passed them in

Prince George Drive, as well as at the police

    vehicles.

Later the crowd gathered on the corner

of Prince George Drive and Hek Street.

Shots were allegedly fired from within

the crowd. Police members fired warning

shots in the sand next to them to disperse

the crowd and to protect themselves and

    their property.

Two of the Operation Combat vehicles

were damaged; one on the right rear wheel.

The other got dents on the drivers door.

Members of the traffic department and

son of Steenberg police, says no arrests

    have been made.

Police have opened a case of public vio-

lence andmalicious damage to property for

investigation. The motive for the incident

sparked from the arrest of the minor sus-

    pect.

    The policewere assisted byMetro Police

and the traffic department. Members of the

public order police were also dispatched to

stabilise the situation. Members of Opera-

    18 local teams in draw

The draw for this years Metropolitan

    Premier Cup (MPC), otherwise knownas

the Bayhill Cup tournament, took place

at the Sports Science Institute in Newl-

    ands last Wednesday.

    The tournament is consideredAfricas

premier youth soccer competition and is

    unofficially known as the breeding

ground of South Africas future soccer

    stars.

This years tournament takes place at

Erica Park in Belhar over Easter week-

end from Wednesday 23 to Monday 28

March. The opening ceremony will be

    held on Friday 25 March.

The tournament draw saw 18 Cape

    sides, including two multiple former

winners in Ajax Cape Town and Hellen-

ic, joined by 14 top-notch teams from

    around SA and abroad.

    Reigning champions Glendene United

from Lansdowne will have their work

cut out to defend their crown. The inter-

national guest teams this year are Swan-

sea City from Wales and Zambias Zesco

    FC.

The tournament is played in front of

crowds of more than 25 000 spectators,

    which always include talent scouts.

    The likes of BenniMcCarthy,Matthew

    Booth, Nasief Morris, Moneeb Josephs,

    Thulani Serero and Rivaldo Coetzee

    gained crucial experience and exposure

in the MPC. Last years player of the

    tournament, Mihlali Mayambela, was

signed after the tournament by Djurgr-

    den, a club in Sweden.

Llewellyn Allen, brand head of Metro-

politan, describes the tournament as a

massive community event as well as a

    world-renowned youth soccer festival.

    PJ Williams, the tournament director,

says demand for spots in the tourna-

ment, with R105 000 in prize money up

for grabs, was extremely high and the lo-

cal Cape clubs who made it in draw de-

    served congratulations for getting

    through the tough qualification rounds.

Williams, who has been involved in

the tournament since its inception in

1989, has no doubt that this years line-up

is one of the best ever and that the finals

will deliver an exciting Easter weekend

    of action.

    Young

    soccer

    players will

    compete in

    the

    Metropoli-

    tan Premier

    Cup in

    Belhar over

    the Easter

    weekend in

    the annual

    competition

    well-known

    for talent

    scouting.

    Cyclists leave

    more than sweat

While around 4500 international cyclists de-

scended on the city for the annual Cape

Town Cycle Tour this past weekend, the

tourism industry stands to gain a major

    boost.

This represents a sizeable number of vis-

itors, all of whom require accommodation,

meals and transport, and, besides the race,

theyre bound to take the opportunity to en-

joy all of the attractions theMotherCity has

to offer, says Cape Town Tourism CEOEn-

    ver Duminy.

The Cycle Tour contributed R450m to the

citys economy in 2014, the last time the full

race took place, and its expected to gener-

ate at least the same figure this year, Dumi-

    ny says.

The contribution of the cycle tour to-

wards the local economy is extensive and

spreads out across the entire peninsula.

Events such as these create a buoyant eco-

nomic environment and help to generate

jobs in tourism and peripheral industries

and contribute to sustainability in busi-

    nesses, he says.

The tour provides a fantastic opportuni-

ty for international exposure, and it takes

place on some of the most scenic roads in

    the country, Duminy says.

Cape Town Stadium where the Cycle

Tour has its start and finishing points is

right at the heart of tourism in the city. This

is the worlds biggest timed cycle tour, and

the sight of all of the cyclists taking part is

an attraction on its own, he says.

A number of tour operators have em-

braced cycling culture and now offer cy-

cling sightseeing tours, including in Langa

and around the city centre, Duminy says.

The Cape Town Cycle Tour brings atten-

tion to the city, and this focus gives us an

opportunity to showcase that the weather

in Cape Town is suitable for cycling most

days of the year, its a fantastic pastime that

allows locals to get to know their own city

as tourists on two wheels, he says.

The Cape Town Cycle Tour contributed

R450m in 2014, with extimated revenue

from this years race set to bring in even

    more for the toursim industry.

    LAVENDER HILL

    Many shot in gang killing

    TIYESE JERANJI

    @jeranji

    L

avenderHill residents are gripped by fear

    following several shooting incidents in

their area over the last couple of months.

There are claims that since the beginning

of the year 15 people have been killed while

about eight people narrowly escaped death.

Tuesday last week was not an easy day for

locals, especially residents close to Stone

Court. Residents were left with churning

stomachs after some of them witnessed a

shooting that left two people dead and four

    others seriously injured.

Among the injured was an 11-year-old boy

who had been caught in the crossfire.

It is alleged that the two deceased victims

were gambling in the court with others

when they were approached by four men.

    Twowere armedwith pistols and twowith

revolvers. All four fired several shots at the

    victims at close range.

A witness then ran and the suspects also

fired at him and his son.

Elton Goliath (21) sustained one gunshot

wound to his head, one to his left arm and

one in each leg. He was declared dead on the

    scene by paramedics.

The second body was that of Salie Abra-

hams (19), who sustained two gunshot

wounds to his head and one to his left shoul-

    der.

During the carnage one of the attackers

    firedanother shot atAbrahamswhilehewas

    lying, which killed him instantly.

When Steenberg police responded to the

shooting they found the two victims lying in

    the parking area.

Three of the injured victims were taken to

Victoria Hospital. The 11-year-old boy sus-

tained one gunshot wound to his lower right

leg after a bullet had also hit his father.

Also lucky to be alive is a 19-year-old who

sustained a gunshot wound to his right

shoulder. He was treated in the ambulance.

Another injured person was a 22-year-old

woman who was treated on the scene by the

paramedics. It is alleged that she ran away

when the shooting started and fell. She was

wounded in the fall on her forehead.

Another survivor is a 17-year-old who sus-

tained one gunshot wound to his left leg. He

was taken to Retreat day hospital.

A 34-year-old man also sustained one gun-

shot wound to his left leg.

    Warrant Officer John Bartlett, spokesper-

    sonof Steenbergpolice, says: Nine cartridg-

eswere retrieved on the crime scene and two

projectiles were found at the house where

the one victim was shot through the door.

Themotive for the shooting is gang-relat-

ed, as, according to witnesses, the suspects

belong to the Junky Funky Kids gang.

No arrests have beenmade at this stage.

Community activist Clive Jacobs says its

time people in Lavender Hill came together

    to fight.

People must be more vigilant. Residents

must report crime and not turn a blind eye.

We cant allow this to continue to happen,

    says Jacobs.

Anyone with information on the shooting

is requested to call Steenberg police on

    021 702 9000.

Residents watch after two people were shot

and killed in broad daylight at Stone Court in

Lavender Hill. The murders are suspected to

    be gang-related.

    MIKES OCEAN TALES

    Litterly

    killing

    us

Take a stroll along most beaches in

    CapeTownandwhat do you see? Plas-

tic bags, plastic bottles, broken glass

and cigarette butts sitting in the

beautiful sand that we love to run our

    toes through.

It is very rare to surf or swim in the

    water of Muizenberg without either

touching a piece of plastic or, at least,

seeing a piece of plastic floating in the

    water.

    Interestingly enough, it is impor-

tant to understand that most of the

    pollution we see doesnt necessarily

come from the direct littering of the

beach. Studies have shown that about

80% of all pollution that enters the

    ocean originates from land.

The litter that is thrown onto land

is either blown into the ocean in the

wind or makes its way into the ocean

via rivers or storm water drains.

Even though the ocean is extremely

large, the effect of pollution is becom-

    ing more evident.

Fish and marine mammals are be-

ing harmed by the litter in the ocean.

They can be strangled or suffocated

    by it.

What is evenmore alarming, is that

the plastic items take decades to natu-

rally biodegrade. So even if the fish

that consume the plastic die, the plas-

    tic itself will live on.

This is when plastics can have an

impact on human health. When hu-

mans consume these fish, not only

can they get food poisoning or im-

mune system problems but in ex-

treme cases these toxins can cause

    cancer.

So what can be done to solve this

    problem?

. Educate the public, starting with

the youth, on the impact of plastic on

    the environment.

. Encourage the recycling of plas-

tic items in our own households.

. Get communities and schools in-

    volved in beach clean-ups.

. Place more rubbish bins along

the coastline and have the waste col-

    lected regularly.

It is a common misconception that

if you cannot see the problem, the

    problem is not affecting you.

    Lets stop the littering.

    LETTERS

    Passion for

    public work

Complaints in the new South Africa

have became a plague, especially in the

    state departments where all, whether

they like it or not, are public servants.

All public servants have the sole

mandate to serve Jan Alleman, no

matter what status in society. I am also

one of these that will complain if I see

or am told that a public servant has

failed Jan Alleman, but praise is due

    where it is necessary.

Simon Daniels, a senior foreman at

the Wynberg solid waste depot off

Rosmead Avenue, is an example of

service delivery. He will take a broom

and sweep where dumpers have messed.

I have seen him help people offload

    their waste.

On Tuesday 1 March I was at the

dump and at the gate was Daniels with

the security checking the cars. Soon

after that he was at the bins busy

assisting the public and his staff. I

commented that he was always so busy

for a senior foreman and he responded

that he was thankful to God for his job

and he had a passion for his work.

As I drove away I thought to myself:

if this man can only give a lecture to

other public servants on the passion for

ones work and the meaning of service

delivery, we will have no complaints,

    only compliments.

    KEITH BLAKE,

    Ottery

    Councillor

    must be

    Jack of all

    trades

When it comes to helping people with

little education, councillors must be on

the forefront of solving their very

    challenging problems.

Recently a widow wanted to take title

of her first husbands rented municipal

    house after he died.

The trouble was that she had married

again and changed her surname to her

    new husbands surname. To complicate

things she wanted the house transferred

    onto her original, maiden surname.

A call to the housing department, in

my presence, revealed that her maiden

and second surname were both invalid

due to her new changed surname. The

    60-year-old was in tears.

What was palpable was that she had

problems with the new husband and

was worried that should she transfer

the house on her latest married sur-

    name, he may lay claim.

The difficulty was that she also did

not trust her adult offspring as co-signa-

tories. Oddly, none of the information

was blatant and needed to be drawn out

    of her with tactical questions.

What was required was to ensure that

the house was transferred onto her

name only and that she also draft a will

leaving the property to her offspring

when she died as she did not trust them

    then.

This is an example of how councillors

    must sometimes work like social

    workers, lawyers and matrimonial and

    conflict mediators.

At the same time, a councillor cannot

get upset at how some people behave

when they insist on telling councillors

how they want to do things. Some

    attitudes often defy logic, municipal

    procedure and law.

What is manifest is that there are

    many people in our multicultural

democracy who are unable to help

themselves. Due to a genuine lack of

education or money, they need help,

    possibly their entire life.

When voting in the upcoming elec-

tion, consider if the prospective council-

lor is the type of person who has the

required qualities, as well as the

education and skills, to do this job.

While voting for a large party may

seem like a logical option, at the end of

the day when you need help, it is the

    councillor you must contact.

    YAGYAH ADAMS,

    Walmer Estate

    Throw the blades away

With profound disgust I am writing

about prices of Gillette razor blades.

The greater majority of men shave

every day, some every second day. The

purpose is that they have to be presenta-

ble to their wives or girlfriends, mana-

gers and employers, especially in the

    workplace.

Retail stores sell Gillette blades as

    follows.

    1. A 4-pack costs R343.00 plus 14 %

    sales tax = R391. Divided by 4 = R97.75

    per blade.

    2. An 8-pack costs R588 plus 14% sales

    tax = R670. Divided by 8 = R83.75 per

blade. Its cheaper buying double and

getting a discount for bulk buying.

    Most men conservatively use two

blades for R195 per month. Some with

hard beards use up to three or four

blades per month (R251 for three, R335

    for four).

Avoiding razor burn, what many men

    have experienced.

What do women pay for their razors?

The worst scenario annually for a 4-pack

    per month (R355 x 12) is R4260. For an

    8-pack its (R670 x 12) R8040.

    The Afrikaners say dis loutere

uitbuitery. It is nothing but robbing and

    plundering the male customer.

The authorities have big gains through

sales tax. I would persuade all the

readers to grow beards. This will put a

twist in Gillette and retails proverbi-

    al cable.

By the way, winter is coming, which

means no cold faces for men. Lekker!
