Important Notes From Your Teacher
Koine/Flood Presentation at HVL ~ Thanks again to everyone who volunteered to help drive and chaperone to HVL on
Wednesday. We really appreciated your help!
Mr. Wilson - 7th & 8th . . . . Just a reminder that all students in grades 5-8 are scheduled to sing this Sunday in both the
8:30 and 11:00 AM worship services. Since it is just those grades singing, it is very important that we have everyone
there. If you know that your child will not be able to make it, please let us know as soon as you can. Please meet in Mrs.
Wilson’s room by 8:15 AM to warm up.
~ This coming Wednesday is already Ash Wednesday. The students who are in choir will be singing in the service at 7:00
PM. Please be in Mrs. Wilson’s room by 6:45 PM to warm up.
~ Have a great weekend!
Mrs. Van Loton - 5th & 6th . . . . ~Reminder – Grades 5-8 sing THIS SUNDAY, February 7th, in BOTH services. We
have been practicing very hard on our songs and need every choir voice present. We will be meeting in Mrs. Wilson’s
room at 8:10am for warm-up and any last minute adjustments!
~Children in Youth Choir will be singing next week Wednesday, February 10 th, on Ash Wednesday. The faculty is
serving that night’s Lenten meal starting at 5:30pm. Please come for dinner before church to feed both your body and
soul that night! The children will need to be in Mrs. Wilson’s room for practice at 6:40pm.
~Next week Friday we will have a small party in the afternoon to pass out Valentine’s cards and candy. Your children are
also welcome to bring in any goodies (cookies, veggies, chips, fruits, etc.) that they would like to share with the class that
day. This is always a fun and “sweet” day for us! I know it goes without saying, but please include all the kids in both
classes if giving out cards!
~The forms to order Scholastic Books are coming home today. You are welcome to order online or with the catalogs your
child has in their Friday Folder. Our classroom’s online code is included at the top of the first book order on a sticker, for
those that have not yet registered online. All prepaid orders must be turned in to school or ordered online by
Wednesday, February 17th.
~I am sending home the permission slip for the HVL Hawkeye Challenge that will be held on Wednesday, February 24 th.
Please note that you can either order pizza for lunch at $1.00 a slice, or choose to “brown bag” it. If you choose to order,
please send the exact amount in WITH the permission slip by this coming Friday, February 12th. I will not need drivers
or chaperones this day, since Mr. Grosinski is transporting us with the HVL bus!
~Please return the Lenten Meal forms by this coming Wednesday, February 10th. The Lenten Meal is going to be a
gigantic potluck put on by our class. Every family will make a favorite entrée and dessert or salad, as well as choose a
time when your family can help with the meal – set-up, serve, or clean-up. I am sending this home in case you can fill in
some blanks by your name. Please send back any changes you make to the sheet by Wednesday. We will update it for
next week’s Friday Facts.
Mrs. Murphy - 3rd & 4th . . . . Our trip to the Ford Rouge plant/Henry Ford Museum is Tuesday. Please send lunches
with beverages in a labeled disposable bag. Drivers and chaperones please meet at school by 8:20. All students should
wear their yellow shirts.
We will be having a small Valentine’s Day next Friday, February 12. Students may bring valentines to pass out to their
classmates. There are 19 students in the room. If you need a class list, you can stop by and pick up one.
Fourth graders have finished their Egyptian masks. They will be on display in our classroom next week. The youth
choir will be singing for our first Lenten service, Wednesday, February 10. There will be a supper consisting of a baked
potato bar and dessert that night beginning at5:30. Come and receive food for both body and soul.
Mrs. Wilson - 1st & 2nd . . . . We had a POPPING 100th Day today. Thanks to some terrific parent helpers, 100 balloons
were blown up. Inside the red balloons were opposites. Inside the blue balloons was a “I have…who has” reading game.
Inside the yellow balloons were states and capitals to match. The pink balloons contained numbers to put in order from
least to greatest. Of course, the balloons had to be popped before we could complete each activity. We divided into
groups and rotated through stations in 10 minute intervals. Station #1 was working together to build a structure with 100
red Solo cups that had to stay standing for 100 seconds. Station #2 required each student to make a mosaic picture with
100 puzzle pieces. Station #3 had miniature red Solo cups to build with. Station #4 had 100+ flashcards to read. We
also completed 100s of physical activities.
Next week our store will be opening. We will be practicing 2 digit addition in first grade and adding 3-2digit numbers
with regrouping in 2nd grade. We still need more clean grocery store containers.
You will also receive a name checklist for Valentines. Please have YOUR CHILD label the Valentines with their
friend’s names. We will be passing them out on Friday.
Both grades are doing amazing work in Shurley English. First graders can recognize Subject Noun, Verb, Adjectives,
Adverbs, Article Adjectives, Complete Subjects and Complete Predicates. They also learned the 6 rules for
capitalization. 2nd graders added Subject-Noun-Verb Pattern 1. They also learned more identification rules for
capitalization. I’ve been really impressed with their work this week!
K-2 cheerleaders will be meeting at HVL on Saturday morning at 10:30am. We will be performing between the
first two games. Come dressed and ready to go!

Mrs. Kasten - Kindergarten . . . . We had so much fun celebrating the 100th Day of School today! Thank you for your extra efforts in helping
your child to prepare their collection of 100 things. We read stories about the 100th Day, had a special 100 days snack, made art projects of what
we think we'll look like when we are 100 years old, did 100 exercises, and built marshmallow towers with 100 marshmallows and 100 toothpicks!
We spent the week reviewing letters Rr and Dd, and also began the letter Ee. In math workshop we have spent our time working with adding and
taking away, using official math words like "minus", "subtract", "equation" and "addition". We have also spent daily time on silent reading. We
worked up to over 12 minutes this week!
Wednesday the 10th is Kindergarten Round-up Day for the preschoolers, who will be visiting our classroom to see how kindergarten works. The
current kindergarteners will get to visit Mrs. Wilson's room for a short time to see how first grade works! There are normal drop off and pick up
times for the day.
We will be celebrating Valentine's Day next Friday in school. Please feel free to send class Valentine cards or treats. We will be eating a special
pizza lunch, so if you would like to send a side or snack, you may, but we do not need that many things. I will not be posting a sign up list, so feel
free to let me know if you would like to send something.
Please note a change to our field trip schedule: Due to the addition of the HVL concert trip, our dentist trip for the month has been cancelled.
Instead, we will be having a dental hygienist visit our class to teach us about good dental health. This will happen towards the end of the month.
K-2 cheerleaders will be meeting at HVL on Saturday morning at 10:30am. We will be performing between the first two games.
Come dressed and ready to go!
Mrs. Gorsegner - Preschool . . . . We have been enjoying reading MO Willem’s books. This week we read some of his pigeon books. The
children loved them.
The fours worked on the letter M and Minions. We have also been working on learning some new silly songs.
Next week Monday, we will not have a regular class. Instead, we will meet at the Michigan Academy of Gymnastics at 9:45am.
On Thursday and Friday, we will celebrate Valentine’s Day with a small party. If your child sends in valentines please have your child only sign
their name (who it is from) Leave the “to” line blank. This is great practice for writing his/her name. If you would like to send in a treat, it must
be wrapped AND attached to the valentine. The threes need 7 cards and the fours will need 16 cards. Thank you for following these instructions,
it makes the party run smoothly.
Have a wonderful weekend.

Serve One Another in Love-Flint Water

in the school office. The fundraiser will be
throughout all of February, so the deadline
will be February 29th.
