ExperientialLearningprovidesstudentswithdirectexperiencethroughwhichtheycanuseanalyticalskillsandreflectiontoapplynewideasgainedfromtheexperiencetotheirclassroomlearning.Experientiallearningincludesinternships,servicelearning,andvariouspracticumopportunities.Determinewhatthebestfitfortheorganizationisbyconsideringthefollowingdefinitions:

Externships(JobShadow)provideaninitialexposuretoacareerforabriefperiodoftime(suchasonedayaweekoracouplehoursperweek)byhavingstudents“shadow”anexperiencedemployeeorprofessional.Externshipsmayincludeacademiccreditwhenconnectedtoacourse.
InternshipsaredefinedbytheNationalAssociationofCollegesandEmployers(NACE)as:“aformofexperientiallearningthatintegratesknowledgeandtheorylearnedintheclassroomwithpracticalapplicationandskillsdevelopmentinaprofessionalsetting.Internshipsgivestudentstheopportunitytogainvaluableappliedexperienceandmakeconnectionsinprofessionalfieldstheyareconsideringforcareerpaths;andgiveemployerstheopportunitytoguideandevaluatetalent.”Inaddition,aninternshipisasemester(fall,spring,summer)induration,mayormaynotcarrycredit,maybepaidorunpaidbasedontheDepartmentofLaborcriteria(SeePage8forDOLRequirements).
AStudentEmployeeisapersonwhoishiredtoprovideservicestoanorganizationonaregularbasisinexchangeforcompensation,notforacademiccredit.Thisisappropriatewhenyoudon’tmeetDepartmentofLabor6Prongtest.(SeePage8)
AcloserlookataVolunteerAVolunteermightbethebestfitforyourorganizationifyouarelookingforonetimeassistanceataneventorprogramorifyouneed3‐12hoursperweekofservice.UnlikeanInternship,thefocusofavolunteerpositionisprimarilyontheservicebeingcompletedandtheindividualorissuereceivingthatservice.Aninternshipwillprimarilyfocusonthelearningexperienceofthestudentandthebenefitstotheorganization/employeraresecondary.ServiceLearningisabalancebetweenthetwowithequalfocusonlearning,serviceandbenefitstorecipientsandproviders.
