What is a Variable?

It is a condition or characteristic that the experimenter manipulates, controls or

observes.

Types of Variable

Independent Variables

Dependent Variables

Confounding Variables

Intervening variables

Extraneous variables

the conditions or characteristics that the experimenter manipulates or controls in his/her attempt to ascertain their relationship to observed phenomena.

Independent Variable

Treatment Variables those factors that the experimenter

manipulates and to which he/she assigns subjects.

Organismic or attribute Variables

those characteristic that cannot be altered by the experimenter.

2 Types Of Independent

Variables

Dependent Variable

the conditions or characteristics that appear, disappear or change as the experimenter introduces, removes, or changes independent variables.

Confounding Variable

those aspects of a study or sample that might influence the dependent variable and whose effect may be confused with the effects of the independent variables.

Intervening Variables those variables that intervene on the cause

and effect.

Extraneous Variables those uncontrolled variables that may have

significant influence on the results of a study.
