The piled foundations for this major hotel developmentcomprised the following...

A perimeter retaining wall consisting of male & femalerotary bored secant piles.A total of 139no male secant piles were drilled indiameters of 600mm, 750mm and 900mm and up to33.05m deep below ground level. Similar quantities of750mm diameter female secant piles were installed withdepths of up to 12.05m below ground level.Male pile reinforcement consisted of cages of 12B32main bars for the full length of the piles. Additional B25bars were fitted to the rebar cages complete with Ancontapered couplers for later extending into the basementslabs. Inclinometer tubes were also attached to therebar cages such that the movement of the secant wallcould be monitored as the basement excavation tookplace.

Bearing piles to support the building internally.A total of 61no 750mm diameter piles were installed todepths of up to 27.35m below ground level. Pilereinforcement consisted of cages of 12B25 main barsagain provided for the full length of the piles.

All piles were installed through Made ground, Alluvium,River Terrace Deposits and terminated in the LondonClay Formation that was encountered at a depth of7.0m below ground level.

As the excavation progresses theexcellent line of the secant wallcan be seen and demonstrates ourability to install secant wall piles tothe strict tolerances required.The secant wall required extensivetemporary propping until thestructural slabs were in place.
