Garden BoxesGarden Boxes

• All the junior classes have a garden box to look after.

• We have to make sure we take care of the plants we are growing.

Problem #1Problem #1

• Room 8 had to decide what we were going to plant in our garden box.

• We had a sharing time and came up with some ideas.

• Some of our ideas included –

• Strawberries• Apples• Oranges• Roses• Flowers• Beans• …and many more.

DecisionDecision

• We decided to plant vegetables and flowers at the beginning of the year.

• We chose vegetables, so we could eat or cook something; and flowers, so our garden box would look beautiful.

Taking careTaking care

• We all had turns to take care of the garden box.

• We did weeding, so the plants could get all the nutrients from the soil; and watering the plants so they would grow big.

HarvestHarvest

• After a couple of months, it was time to harvest the vegetables. They were a bit overgrown.

• The daisies bloomed and grew really big.

What did we try? What did we try?

• Our flowers grew really big too.

• We were able to try some fresh lettuce leaves from our garden.

• The beetroot had to be put in the compost heap though, it was too big!

Problem #2Problem #2

• After clearing out the garden box, we had no plants and we had to decide what we were going to have for our new crop.

SolutionSolution

• After a vote we decided that we would have sunflowers. We all love sunflowers!

Reduce, reuse, recycleReduce, reuse, recycle

• Mrs Thompson bought some dwarf sunflower seeds and we reused some plastic jelly containers to sow our seeds. We all had our own sunflower to take care of.

Things to rememberThings to remember

• We wrote down a list of things we have to do to take care of our sunflowers.

• We had to water our seeds and put them in the sunlight to grow.

SeedlingsSeedlings

• When they grew into seedlings we put them carefully in our garden box.

• Then we waited for them to grow..

• We made sure to water them when they needed a drink.

ResultsResults

• About six weeks later we had dwarf sunflowers growing in our garden box.

• Some of us were lucky to take one home.

2010 - Problem2010 - Problem

• The new classrooms were being built and our garden box was behind bars.

• We cared for our environment until our garden box was freed.

SolutionSolution

• We moved our garden box in front of Room 8.

CropsCrops

• This year Mrs Karan donated some succulents and Mrs Thompson donated a gardenia plant.

• We have to remember to take care of our garden box, by watering the plants and making sure to clear out the weeds if they grow.

EvaluationEvaluation

• We found out that we have to do lots to take care of our garden box.

• We have to make sure we all help out together, when we are watering the plants and pulling out weeds.

• It is exciting to be able to eat food you grow yourself.

• Who knows what will be planted next year?
