How will I

think or act

differently as a result of

today’s event?

If we always do what

we’ve always done…

…we’ll always get what

we’ve always got!

When you stop

being a student,

you stop being

a nurse! (Wain, 2005)

To build your self worth

you must first discover your

values and then make up

your own definition of success.

Your self worth

is a function of how

you value yourself.

MAIN THING for you as nurses working

in health and patient care?

They make clear exactly what quality nursing

care looks like and provide a framework for

supporting the evaluation of care through

the development of useful measures.

The Principles of Nursing

Practice describe what

everyone can

expect from

nursing.

Values

Please share a positive example

of how the value is ‘lived’

in your area of practice.

What would you like do

differently regarding the

value you’ve been discussing?

What would you expect to see, hear

or feel if the value was being

‘lived’ in your area of practice?

Make the

CARE OF

PEOPLE your first concern,

treating them as

individuals and

respecting their dignity

Compassion alone

is not enough;

care without compassion

is unacceptable;

care without knowledge

is dangerous;

care without responsibility

is reckless.

The biggest disease

today is not leprosy

or tuberculosis but

rather the feeling of

being unwanted,

uncared for and

deserted by

everybody

Do we treat patients well?

Did we help them

with their problem?

Do we deliver safe,

high quality services?

Do patients experience timely

access to our services?

Who is

If management is efficiency

in climbing the ladder…

…then

leadership

determines

whether

the ladder

is leaning

against the

right wall.

• Be a role model for those who follow

• Be humble and remember your role

is to be of service to others

• Be visible and accessible

• Deal with team dynamics

• Be innovative

• Collaborate and build communities

• Engage people

• Act decisively

• What have you started but not worked on?

• What is in progress, but not complete?

• What is almost complete, but still not

finished?

• What things have you been unable to start?

• What things have you been unable to

change?

• What things have you been unable to stop?

• What helpful behaviours do you need to model?

• How can you be of greater service to others?

• How can you become more visible and accessible?

• What team dynamics need to be created or addressed?

• How can you encourage others to be innovative?

• With whom do you need to collaborate and what

alliances can you build?

• What do you need to do to achieve greater

engagement?

• What will you do to act more decisively and when

will you do it?

Final

Thoughts

To build your self worth

you must first discover your

values and then make up

your own definition of success.

Your self worth

is a function of how

you value yourself.

The truth is that our finest

moments are most likely to

occur when we are feeling

deeply uncomfortable,

unhappy, or unfulfilled.

For it is only in such moments, propelled

by our discomfort, that we are likely to

step out of our ruts and start searching

for different ways or truer answers.

How will I

think or act differently as a result of today’s event?

…and

finally...

…I’ll

probably

do nothing

about it!

If I do nothing

about it in 24 hours…
