WESSEX RugbyClub had a rare dayoff from their TributeDevon One Leaguecommitments yes-terday, althoughthere will be plentymore arduous Satur-days ahead.

But for some of thesquad, the season is un-likely to get much morehair-raising than laterthis month when theyundertake a waxingevening.

At least five playershave signed up for the tor-ture that is a leg wax or,for the braver ones, a backwax!

The purpose for such dubi-ous entertainment is to raisefunds for the local church, StThomas’ in Cowick Street,Exeter, where the clergy andcongregation are currentlyraising funds to enable vitalrestoration works to becarried out.

The church needs to find a

some or plenty of rugby play-ing experience, and details ofwhere and when you canplay can be found at:www.o2touch.rfu.com

There will be a formallaunch, hopefully in the CityCentre, and details will beavailable in due course.

Meanwhile, more detailsabout the youth section canbe found the club’s websiteat: www.wessexrfc.co.uk

With the Rugby World Cupcoming to Exeter next year,

Wessex want to be in a posi-tion to take advantage of anyopportunities that will arise, and believe that working to-gether with their local part-ners will enable them to meetexpectations.

None of this, however, would be possible withoutthe continued help and sup-port of sponsors, players, members, supporters andother individuals, for whichWessex RFC are most grate-ful.

substantial amount of moneyto ensure that it can remainopen and Wessex RFC, tradi-tionally a community-basedclub, were only too pleased tohelp out.

The chosen, or ‘volun-teered’ members, will startthe waxing at 7.00 pm on Sat-urday, October 18, at TheRoyal Oak in OkehamptonStreet, Exeter, which acts astheir clubhouse, and where‘mine hosts’ Mark Aggett andSadie Evan, are hosting theevening.

The ‘entertainment’ will befollowed by a race night, andthe evening, which is open toall, should be full of fun… ifnot a little pain.

As a club Wessex see theevent as a perfect opportu-nity to gain awareness notonly of the church appeal butalso of the rugby club’s stand-ing in local community.

More details about thechurch and appeal can befound at http://westexeteam-ministry.moonfruit.com

Meanwhile, on the playingfront, Wessex have made agood start to the season, bothin the League and in the RFUNational Vase.

But they still would like tohear from anyone interestedin playing competitive rugbyas one of the club’s objectivesis to have regular second-team fixtures.

That cannot be achievedwithout more players whocan make themselves regu-larly available so that Wessexcan fulfil a commitment toother clubs.

Meanwhile officials are intalks with the local council, the RFU and education estab-lishments to review and im-prove the playing facilities atthe delightfully-named Flow-erpot Fields.

An ambitious club, theywant to provide a rugby expe-rience for all ages and abili-ties, and are fully committedto improving their groundand amenities.

As well as their seniorLeague side, Wessex are nowin their second season of pro-moting youth rugby and willsoon be in a position to playfixtures at under-sevens,eights and nines age-grouplevels.

However, to keep the mo-mentum going they need toattract more players, coachesand volunteer.

The junior section cur-rently trains at FlowerpotFields every Sunday morn-ing, from 11.00 am, where allpotential members – no pre-vious rugby playing experi-ence is required – will bemade most welcome.

The club is currently re-porting success with the O2‘Touch’ programme for Ex-eter.

The aim is to attract play-ers who again have either no,
