Ontario’s Environmental Technology Sector
• Focus still in traditional areas of air, water & waste• Sector now includes alternate energy, energy management
and environmental monitoring equipment• Revenues >$7 B/annum with >$750 M exports• Innovation clusters include water in Halton/Hamilton, alternate
energy in Kingston and air pollution in the GTA• Level of R&D in industry is low; links to academia poor;
government support to SMEs is low
Supposedly over 2000 companies in Ontario, primarily small companies and service providers:
New Ministry of Research and Innovation programs starting to address some of these issues.

“To provide business services to strengthen the Ontario and Canadian environmental and energy industries through commercialization of new technologies and to promote the adoption of sustainable development strategies by Canadian Industrial SME’s both domestically and internationally”.
OCETA’s Mandate:
Established in 1993 as one of three “ Canadian Environmental Technology Advancement Centres” by Environment Canada;Private sector, not-for-profit organization;Office is located in Mississauga;Four main business areas:• SME Client Services• Technology Verification• Sustainable Development• Information Products
OCETA has assisted over 1,000 companies and institutions.

Environmental Technology Verification
The Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) Program provides validation and independent verification of environmental technology performance claims.
This initiative has been developed to promote the commercialization of new environmental technologies into the market place and thus provide industry with the tools to address environmental challenges efficiently, effectively and economically.

OCETA’s ORCP Project “Building Industrial Receptor Capacity”
OCETA will bring together research institutions and industry to collaborate on research and development to help address technical issues in the development of a technology. These parties will develop strategies to commercialize products that address Canadian environmental priorities.
OCETA will also help Ontario companies access markets, and will expand its business support services for companies with environmental technologies.
OCETA is funding initiatives in four areas:•Discovery Workshops•Route to market•Business Support to RINs•Proof of Principle R&D (Precarn)
Builds on OCETA’s proven experience in delivering commercialization services to entrepreneurs, SMEs and research centres.
