Executive Director’s Message
Melanie Pursel
Although we are continuously promoting all that there is to do and see in Ocean City this summer, we are also
planning for the upcoming membership year. One of our top priorities is to work on additional amendments to
HB1 (Healthy Working Families Act -Paid Leave) that was passed during the 2018 legislative session (as a veto
override). We recently had the Maryland Chamber come to a legislative wrap up of planning session for next
year. They are in the process of setting up a mechanism to collect both empirical and anecdotal data regarding
the impact of this bill on Maryland businesses. Now that this is law, please keep track of what this has cost
your business (in terms of additional recordkeeping and replacing workers who have taken off), as well as any
personnel decisions you have had to make to comply which may require you to hire less, or provide fewer
hours.
Again, it is critical that we express the impact that this has on your personnel and overall business. As you
know, especially with the seasonal nature of most Ocean City businesses, this will have a dramatic impact,
requiring you to give seasonal/part time employees paid leave. We hope by collecting this impact data, we will
have the ability to introduce amendments to the law such as a 120+ day seasonal exemption and lessening
sanctions.
I also encourage you to take the time to nominate a deserving individual for one of our annual Ocean City
Chamber Awards, the deadline is July 15th. This is a fantastic way to honor and acknowledge a person or organ-
ization that has made an impact here in the region!
Finally, congratulations to the many new and expanding businesses that we have hosted Ribbon Cuttings for;
this has been our busiest season yet.
Wishing everyone a safe and productive summer!
Warmest Regards, Executive Director 410.213.0144 ext 102 melanie@oceancity.org
