Business
The chamber also weighed in with written testimony on a number of issues. A full summary of where all of these bills ultimately end up will be provided at the end of session. We will also have a thorough discussion of the session during the Legislative EDC Meeting which will be in May. For additional updates please visit https://oceancity.org/the-chamber/maryland-legislative-updates/. Unfortunately, not much went our way this session, although we fought incredibly hard. Thank you to all of the business owners who took time away to come and testify in person. I do feel that we were able to secure a number of amendments with the min wage bill, which helped ease the transition slightly. However, on March 27th Governor Hogan vetoed both the Minimum Wage Bill as well as the Post Labor Day repeal. The legislature does have enough time to overturn the vetoes, so we will keep you posted!
There are also 2 excellent training sessions being offered - we have worked in partnership with the HMRA and Wor-Wic Community College to help you create the ULTIMATE guest experience! The detailed invitation is in the newsletter.
Our goals are to:
Create an Ocean City Culture of Kindness
Provide Exceptional Service to all of our Guests
You will walk away with:
Tools to build and maintain a strong, service-oriented front line workforce
The ability to ensure excellent customer service skills for your entire staff
The necessary skills to ensure a memorable guest experience
A certificate of completion from Wor-Wic Community College
I would also like to personally invite all of our members as well as potential members to the Chamber Open House and Community Shred Day planned for Friday April 26th from 10 to 4pm at the Chamber Visitor’s Center. Shredding services will be free and open to all members. This is a great opportunity to meet the staff, learn about the ways in which the chamber can assist your business and get one-on-one assistance with your online profile.
Finally, please mark your calendars for the annual J-1 employer conference planned for April 11th at the Grand Hotel and Spa; we will be discussing cultural differences and the guest experience as well as housing, safety, regulations social security and the bike lights initiative!
As the season quickly approaches, the town and the entire region are bustling with activity. A number of new restaurants, hotels and retail shops are under construction or making major improvements for the 2019 summer season. This is a fantastic sign that our economy is strengthening and there is tremendous optimism about the future. We hope that you can join us for the many ribbon cuttings that will be held throughout the spring. April 8th is Sine Die which marks the end of the legislative session. This has been an incredibly active session with a number of bills introduced that will have an impact on small business and Ocean City as a community. With the engagement of our chamber with the Maryland Chamber and Maryland Tourism Coalition, we had a strong voice either in support or opposition to a number of bills. We testified in Annapolis several times this session including bill hearings on the increase in minimum wage, a 120 day exemption for paid leave, the repeal of the Post Labor Day school start executive order and a bill that would authorize chambers to provide Association Health Plans (AHPs), to name a few.

Veronica Correa, Owner, and Clinical Director of The
Personal Wellness Center in Salisbury presents
“The Secret to a Magical Life”
“Years ago, my heart’s desire and my mind’s vision was to create a Wellness Center in our community. I had no prior business experience and limited resources, but there was a little voice inside me that said I could do it. When I decided to listen to my heart and began to unfold my vision, an intense feeling of fear set in very strongly.
In order to accomplish this dream, I knew I had to face my fear. Creating my business was simultaneously the scariest and most beautiful pursuit of my life because it allows me to fulfill my life’s purpose.”
