Drive Safe: Hang Up and FocusAccording to the National Highway

Traffic Safety Administration(NHTSA), 20 percent of all crashes in2008 were caused by some type ofdistraction, and 5,870 people died inaccidents involving a distracted driver. These numbers are significant, but theNHTSA stresses that they may bemuch higher, as it can be difficult forlaw enforcement officers to identifydistraction and its role in crashes.

In order to cut down on distracteddriving, the NHTSA is determined toeducate drivers and passengers aboutthe main types of distraction: visual(taking your eyes off the road),manual (taking your hands off thewheel) and cognitive (taking your mindoff driving). Texting on a cell phoneinvolves all three types at one timeand is cause for greatest alarm. Otherdistractions include eating or drinking, changing the radio station or MP3

player, using a navigation system, talking to passengers or beingemotionally distressed.

Additionally, the NHTSA warns:• Drivers using hand-held devices

are four times as likely to get intocrashes serious enough to causeinjury.

• Using a cell phone while driving(hand-held or hands-free) delaysreaction time as much as havinga blood alcohol concentration of.08 percent.
