Q. My husband and I are planning a major remodeling project this winter. We want to have it completed by next summer. One of our kids is graduating from high school and we are expecting family to travel and stay at our place. Should I go through one of the online contractor referral services? Patty of Steuben County
A. I suggest that you do a little research online first. Contractor referral websites like Angie’s List or Homeadviser have become popular because today we think we can get something cheap and have to put little work into it. Wrong on all accounts.
Hiring a contractor is not
necessarily hard; you just need to do diligence on the part of getting things in writing, getting referrals and looking at the details.
Whenever you bring in a third party like a contractor referral service you are paying someone else, typically in a completely different state, to recommend a contractor. Our company participates in several of these sites so the contractors are not bad but that service is not free. We participate in the ones we feel have some merit to prequalification and are providing a service to today’s customers with little time to spend interviewing various contractors.
Again I will mention that these services are not free. Either you pay to get a list of prescreened contrac-tors or we as contractors pay for the prescreened customer inquiries. In either case, the customer ends up paying for these costs. Even if you are new to the area and know no one, there are ways to evaluate contractors and gather information on your own.
Yes, I recommend getting a couple of quotes but what you’re really doing is interviewing contractors. You want to see what they are able to offer you and how they do business.
Q. My husband and I were in Arizona last winter at a friend’s house and they had just completed an extensive remodel project. It looked incredible. The trim work was detailed and the expansion to the existing house was seamless. I couldn’t tell where the addition met the old house. My question is this: They had shelving on a tall wall in the living room that was virtually suspended from the wall. How did they do that? — A Noble County reader
A. First off, well designed and constructed projects are timeless and will maintain their value better than any low cost or poorly designed project.

When you’re talking about most families, their most important invest-ment is their home.
I am amazed at the people that have uneducated carpentry crews attack their home. Sometimes it works out OK if they have it profes-sionally designed and are willing to be hands on with project manage-ment, but again you are best off with someone with a solid track record of successful projects.
The shelving you saw is not a new technique but it needs careful planning. Generally, the support for the shelf is recessed and supported by the wall structure. Typically there is a steel rod that is anchored to the wall framing before drywall, and the shelf is drilled and attached to the steel rods to produce a look of no support.
It is similar to when shelves are mounted on corbelled support often found in masonry fireplaces. A corbel or console is a structural piece of stone, wood or metal jutting from a wall to support everything from
shelves to counter top overhangs. They are typical in masonry to support the fireplace mantel.
Q. We have been thinking of doing some remodeling on our home for some time now. My family and I just can’t seem to make some final decisions about the new floor plan. The addition is relatively large, about 800 square feet. We did the plan ourselves on graph paper to keep it in scale. I was online and Goggled “room addition designs” and was floored by all the online offers for design service with ready made plans and estimated costs. A. I guess my best answer is yes, you can get anything from the Internet and yes, their pricing is accurate depending on where you are in the country and what your final choices are in material and workman-ship.
In today’s world of online everything, do you want some person in Virginia doing a plan for adding
onto your home? Someone who has probably never even been to Indiana.
The best plans are with someone that visits your location and evaluates the conditions of your existing house: Someone who meets with you and talks to you about what you want to achieve from your project and someone who develops an understanding about what your personal tastes are.
If your idea is to save time or money by getting something general and then making decisions from there, it will cost more time and money in the long run. If the idea is to have one design to show different contractors so that they are pricing apples for apples, it is great but now what do the changes cost with different builders? There are plenty of ways to get specific plans for your project with local expert designers, draftsmen and architects. It is worth every penny.
