Project Objectives
1. To identify and characterize rapid NDT technologies for
concrete deck deterioration;
2. To evaluate strengths and limitations of NDT
technologies from perspective of speed, accuracy,
precision, and ease of use;
3. To validate promising technologies;
4. To recommend test procedures and protocols for most
effective application of NDT methods evaluated
5. To develop an NDT repository for practitioners.

Selection of Deterioration Types
Evaluation of NDT technologies was carried out based
on following four deterioration types:
• Corrosion
• Delamination
• Cracking, and
• Concrete degradation

Selection of Performance Measures
Performance measures selected for categorizing and
ranking of technologies:
• Accuracy,
• Repeatability,
• Ease of data collection, analysis and interpretation,
• Speed of data collection and analysis, and
• Cost of data collection and analysis.

Validation Testing
1. Field component
a. LTBP Program bridge in
Haymarket, VA (84 x 12 ft)
• Leveraging available “ground
truth” data
b. Concentrated on repeatability,
speed, ease of use of NDT
technologies.
c. Information regarding costs
associated with testing from
participants.

Validation Testing 2. Laboratory Component (UTEP)
a. 20x8 ft bare deck slab with a series of
defects/deteriorations (delamination,
vertical cracks, corrosion).
b. Section of a real bridge where
deterioration and defects determined
after testing through autopsies.
c. Concentrates on accuracy and
repeatability of NDT technologies.

Content of Electronic NDT Toolbox
1. Summarized information on all recommended
methods for bridge deck evaluation, to obtain:
a. information about a particular NDT technique,
and
b. a prioritized list of NDT techniques for different
types of deterioration detection.

Elements Needed for Successful
Implementation
• Presentation of the beneficial use of NDT
technologies and demonstration of the NDToolbox
as a resource tool.
• Continued support for maintenance and update of
the NDToolbox, as the new research, development
and technology validation results get available.
