NEYVELI UTTAR PRADESH POWER

LIMITED

THERMAL POWER PLANTA thermal power station is a power plant in which the prime mover is steam driven. Water is heated, turns into steam and spins a steam turbine which drives an electrical generator.

 Environmental Constraints/concerns

Air environment :

The high amount of carbon dioxide emission (0.9-0.95 kg/kwh) from thermal power plants contribute to global warming leading to climate change is significant enough.

Water environment:

If the reservoir accumulates runoff from agricultural fields, the water contain high amounts of fertilizer and pesticide residues, which may accumulate in the reservoir.

Biological Environment

The effect on biological environment can be divided into two parts, viz. the effect on flora and the effect on fauna. Effect on flora is due to land acquisition.  Land acquisition leads to loss of habitat of some species.

Conclusion of environmental constraints

• Thermal Power Plant affects environmental segments of the surrounding region very badly.

• Large amount of SOx, NOx & SPM are generated which damage the environment and are highly responsible for the health of human beings, animal kingdom as well as plants.

• SPM gets deposited on the plants which affect photosynthesis. Spreading & deposition of SPM on soil, disturb the soil thereby the fertile and forest land becomes less productive.

Specific ConditionsLatest satellite imagery shall be submitted on an annual basis to monitor the alterations of the area.

The guidelines for import of coal, as and when notified by the concerned Authority, shall be compiled with.

The coal transportation shall be by rail only.

FGD shall be provided to minimize the SO2 emissions.

The sulphur and ash content of coal should not exceed 0.46% & 6% respectively.

General Conditions The sewage treatment plant shall be provided and the • treated sewage shall be used for raising plantation.

Adequate safety measures shall be provided in the plant • area to check spontaneous fire in the coal yard, specially• during summer season.

First aid and sanitation arrangements shall be made for the • drivers and other contract workers during construction phase.

Noise levels emanating from turbines shall be so controlled • such that the noise in the work zone shall be limited to 85 dB(A).

EIA

Environmental Impact Assessment is a process of evaluating the likely environmental impacts of a proposed project or development , taking into account inter-related socio-economic , cultural and human-health impacts, both beneficial and adverse.

PROCESS OF EIA

The main steps in the EIA process are:ScreeningScopingPrediction and mitigationManagement and monitoringaudit

Solutions of thermal power plant

Boiler is used for steam generationTurbo generator converts mechanical energy

into electric energyHydrogen gas used in generators used for

cooling of generatorsESV which is called emergency stop value

used to stop supply of steam to turbine where unit trips

Boilers feed pump used to provide water to boiler drum

Condenser used to condense steam exhausted from turbine.
