May 5, 2010: Discharge pool water. Tim Harmon 5K Run/Walk. Bike to Work Day. “Your Community, Your Call.”
Discharge Pool Water
Improperly discharged pool water: Often results in fish kills. Harms aquatic plants
and animals. Causes stream bank
erosion and floodingof personal property.
Discharge Pool Water
Pool water is oxygen-deficient: Discharging directly into a stream
or storm drain may result in dead fish and the loss of aquatic insects that inhabit the stream system.
Discharge Pool Water
Be careful discharging pool water: Rapidly discharged water can
cause erosion of the stream bed and banks, especially in smaller receiving streams.
Discharge Pool Water
Prior to discharging swimming pool water:
De-chlorinate the water; let it stand untreated for at least seven days.
Ensure that the pH of the pool water is close to the pH of the receiving stream. (usually close to pH 7, but should be tested first)
Remove excess sediment and leaves.
Discharge Pool Water
Prior to discharging swimming pool water:
Know where the discharged water will flow so it doesn’t flood your basement or affect your neighbors’ property
Discharge the water soit does not directly entera storm drain or a stream.
Discharge Pool Water
Prior to discharging swimming pool water:
Discharge the water over a grassy area to slow it down and aerate it
Discharge the water at a slow rate (over 24 hours is best) so it does not erode stream banks downstream of the pool.
