Acronym soup• University Corporation for

Atmospheric Research (UCAR; http://www.ucar.edu)– National Center for Atmospheric Research

(NCAR)– Front Range GigaPoP (FRGP)– Bi-State Optical Network (BiSON)– Western Regional Network (WRN)

• Questions and discussions throughout as needed – and as for acronym soup ingredients, please ask if I miss one or check decoder page at http://bit.ly/acronym-soup

Front Range GigaPoP (FRGP)• http://www.frgp.net

• Continued and expanded LANDER support and partnership

• PerfSonar in the FRGP continues to expand and be a valuable tool

• Started new 5-year agreement cycle 7/1/14• New agreements• Completely new cost model

• Increased costs due to shifts from UCAR• Some smaller participants moved to EAGLE-

Net due to cost increases - ~5

FRGP Cont’d• Colocation updates

• 1200 Larimer• The UPS fix/update/removal

• 910 15th

• adding NOAA TIC colo• splicing CDOT fiber to expand BiSON

• Continued steady growth in all traffic (peering, commodity, I2, etc.)

• New participants:– NEON– Jefferson County School District– CSU-P– Colorado College– State of Wyoming– I2-USDA

FRGP Cont’d• Peering

– Upgrading connection to Google to 2x10G– Comcast moving to 10G– TR/CPS – still largest single FRGP usage– Akamai - continues high utilization– Netflix - continues high utilization – Coresite/Any2 – 10Gbps exchange– Open to other peering opportunities

– 95th Percentiles - Member port maximum and 95th percentiles

• National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL) – ring pending

• Expanding to:• CSU-P• Colorado College• UC-CS• I2-USDA• Jefferson County School District• CSM – ring pending• UW – upgrading to 100G

• Continuing to build ADVA replacement fund and upgrade to 100G

• Adding redundancy/resiliency

UCAR Point of Presence (UPoP)• Gone

– UPoP integrated into the FRGP and ceased to be a separate entity with the flattening of the new FRGP cost model effective 7/1/14

Internet2• NET+ roll out

• Expansion to further RONs on hold pending I2• Considering having third party, MERIT, manage for

Colorado via FRGP or EAGLE-Net• Marla co-chairing I2 Diversity Initiative• State of Wyoming became US UCAN

member

Internet2• Steve and Marla participating in I2

Network/Connector call/meeting agenda development• Discussing the evolution in the R&E networking

ecosystem• Opportunities to collectively serve national

organizations such as PBS, USDA, etc. and how we work together to create solutions.

• Network architecture that includes both Internet2 and the regionals in support of “friction-free” science and innovation among the research universities.

CDOT• Lots of fiber activity in various parts

of the State• I-25 build – complete by EAGLE-Net

• EAGLE-Net installing colo at the NCAR Wyoming Supercomputing Center (NWSC)

• US36 fiber into Boulder of great interest – ongoing discussion

• Southern Colorado• CDOT/Higher Ed Fiber Map• Golden Ring

WRN• Regular WTC and WPC calls• 100G ports in LA, Seattle, and

Chicago• Upgrading WRN to 100G using

Ciena optics in I2 WDM hardware and 100G Brocade switches • Pending I2 100G lambda activation

Rocky Mountain Cyberinfrastructure Mentoring

and Outreach Alliance (RMCMOA)

• NSF CC*IIE Grant• PIs/Organizations: Colorado State

University (Pat Burns), UCAR (Marla Meehl), University of Colorado (Thomas Hauser) , University of Utah (Steve Corbato), IRON (Michael Guryan – Senior Personnel)

RMCMOA Cont’d• The partners have a long and fruitful history of

collaboration, leadership and innovation in regional and state networking, cyberinfrastructure (CI), and high performance computing (HPC) technology and infrastructure operations. These partners propose to leverage their expertise and organizational structures to lead and manage an outreach effort to better inform, educate and drive adoption and expansion of advanced networking and CI technologies to small colleges and universities in the western region of the United States, specifically those in the states of Colorado, New Mexico, Idaho, Utah, and Wyoming. This regional footprint coincides geographically with the NSF sponsored Westnet regional network that operated from 1986 through 1996 that still persists as a fruitful affinity group today.

RMCMOA Cont’d• First RMCMOA workshop held yesterday, 1/13/15• Agenda here:
