Health Practitioner Regulation Amendment Bill 2010becomes our national legislative requirement from the 1st July 2010

The Nurses and Midwives Act 1991 &Nurses and Midwives Regulation 2008

ceases from the 30th June 2010

Poisons and Therapeutic Goods Act 1966 &Poisons and Therapeutic Goods Regulation 2008

remains valid in NSW.

Australia• Podiatry Board of Australia• Psychology Board of Australia

What does this mean for you?

• Registration will be due by the 31st May each year

• National registration fee

• May work in any state or territory in Australia

• You become accountable for YOUR own professional identity and development

New Obligations for Nurses & Midwives

New Registration Standards

• Continuing professional development

• Recency of Practice• Professional Indemnity

Insurance• Criminal history• English language skills• Endorsement of Nurse

Practitioners• Endorsement for Eligible

Midwives• Endorsement for scheduled

medicines registered nurses

Continuing Professional Development

• At least 20 hours/points of CPD• RN’s with scheduled medicines

endorsement & NP’s endorsed under the National Law must complete an extra 10 hours related to the endorsement

• 1 hr of active learning = I pt of CPD• CPD must be relevant to the nurse’s

context of practice• Written documentation that

demonstrates evidence• Must include dates, description of

outcome, number of hours spent in each activity and be verified

Continuing Professional Development (cont’d)

• Demonstration of learning needs based against the ANMC guidelines (annual appraisal)

• Learning plan based on appraisal• Proven participation in effective

learning activities relevant to learning needs (certificate of attendance, evaluation evidence)

• Reflection of the value of the learning activity and the impact on their practice

• Mandatory skills acquisition may be counted towards CPD

• Annual audit of 2% of nurses registered in Australia

PROFESSIONAL PORTFOLIO –maintaining a history in your portfolio

• Curriculum vitae• Job descriptions• Registration certificates• Educational transcripts• Awards• Employment records

PROFESSIONAL PORTFOLIO –maintaining a record of professional activities in your portfolio

• Presentation• Publications• Membership in

organisations• Awards• Commendations• Research activities• Any documentation that

demonstrates professional achievements

Assessment

• Self assessment based on the ANMC competency standards (annual performance appraisal)

• Professional review (annual performance appraisal)

• Annual declaration of competence (signed at the time of renewal of registration & copy kept in portfolio)

Continuing professional development -examples

• Your responsibility to calculate hours/points of active learning

• Reflecting on feedback (practice journal)

• Acting as preceptor or mentor• Participation in audits or quality

improvement• Reading discussion groups

(journal clubs)• Journal articles• Developing policies, protocols,

guidelines• Presenting or attending

workplace education• Undertaking further study

Recency of Practice

• Must have practiced within the last 5 years; or

• Completed a re-entry to practice program; or

• Can demonstrate successful completion of a supervised practice experience.
