Mumbay (a one´s day visit)

Gateway of India:

An Arc de Triumph built to commemorate the visit of King George V in 1911, ironically is today remembered as the place where British chose to stage their departure in 1948.The last battalion slowly marched under the arch to board the waiting ship back to Tilbury

Taj Mahal Hotel, facing the Gateway of India

The Taj Mahal Hotel:

The parsi businessman J.N.Tata (founder of the Tata´s Group) is supposed to have built the Hotel in 1903, as an act of revenge, after being denied the entrance at what was the best hotel in the city, the Watson, only for “whites”.

Anyway, is an architecture marvel that brings together Moorish,Oriental and Florentine styles

Cricket is played in the Maidans ( parks), Mumbay´s people are fanatic of this sport

Traditional meeting point

Dhobi Ghat,( the world largest outdoor laundry)

Row upon row of open-air concret wasch –sinks each with its own flogging stone

Heavy wood-burning irons are used for presssing

Though most of locals think it rather amusing, (that this works arouses such curiosity) it´s really fascinating, at least a great photo opportunity

Here is where Mumbay traditional washers provides a wonderful service, collecting dirty laundry, washing and returning it neatly pressed.

Nearby “Gateway of India” , a favorite spot for an evening stroll
