Dad’s Bring Your Child to School Day at SMCES By: Tiffany Simmons
On Tuesday, September 10, the students began the day with their dads bringing
them to school. This was a day for dads to come out and see how their child’s day
begins. There were also some of our hometown constituents (Mayor Vernon
Twitty, City Councilman Derek Hadley, Attorney Gregory Williams, Rev. Ananias
Hopkins, and Mr. Dewayne Burley) and school officials
(Superintendent Vic Hill, Mr. Cartier Whitlock, and Mr. Willie
Marcus) who greeted our students and their dads. There were
approximately “100” dads who came out for this occasion. The
South Mitchell County Elementary School Family truly
appreciates the support that was shown on our first “Dads
Bring Your Child to School Day.”

Mitchell County School System Teacher of the Year
Mitchell County High School Teacher of the Year Mrs. Crosby has been an Early Childhood Education Pathway teacher at MCHS for six years. She received
her Bachelor’s degree from Georgia Southern University and graduated Magna Cum Laude. She believes
the main factor that influenced her to become a teacher is her family’s strong belief in the field of education
as a career. She believes, as an educator, “learning is an ongoing and positive opportunity for the students
as well as the teachers…effective teachers continuously encourage student
achievement, strive to increase engagement of student learners and provide
students with a developmentally appropriate learning environment.” Mrs. Crosby
has served in a variety of roles at MCHS: Statistician for the football program,
volunteer field goal kicker coach, Assistant Coach for the Varsity Boys and Girls
Tennis teams, Varsity Cross Country Coach, Homecoming Committee Chairman,
Prom Committee Chairman, and a volunteer sports supervisor for basketball,
football, and softball games. Along with her FCCLA adviser duties, she also
serves on her school’s Better Seeking Team and the system’s Curriculum
Coordinating Council (CCC) committee. Continued page 6 …..

MCMS Differentiating Instruction By: Ms. S. Williams
Differentiating instruction, a framework or philosophy for effective teaching that
involves providing students with different avenues to acquiring content, is an
important aspect of education. As a matter of fact, the evaluation tool, Teacher
KEYS, has a standard that is centered around differentiated instruction. In an
effort to engage all learners, the sixth grade math teachers have incorporated more
hands-on activities and math games into their lessons. As research suggests, the
students are really enjoying the lessons and are actively engaged in the learning
process. Ultimately, this engagement will lead to improved scores on standardized
tests, increased intrinsic motivation, in a safe learning environment where students
are not afraid to try. Above left: Students working in collaborative pairs with
hands-on activity finding the greatest common factor
by drawing and using manipulatives to solve.

groups to play Math Millionaire. The students were

operations. MCC6EE1, MCC6EE2a-2c, MCC6EE3,

5 members of a royal family from captivity by
following the steps of order of operations correctly. MCC6EE2c
6TH Grade Math Students Go Carouseling “We like it!” were the words literally spilling out of excited students’ mouths. In 6th grade, we have implemented a
cooperative learning strategy called The Carousel. The carousel is a creative and motivating way to help students
learn. The strengths of this strategy include holding students accountable
for lesson objectives, helping teammates learn, and targeting bodily-
kinesthetic intelligence. During the lesson objective, students had to
rotate posts (chart paper with three different questions regarding
exponents, order of operations, and translating expressions) solving
problems. Each student had a role to ensure that all students were fully
engaged and working together to complete the assignment. More
importantly, differentiated instruction was utilized with the different
levels of questioning (low, moderate, and high).

The County-wide District Project Achievement The County-wide District Project Achievement (DPA) is an annual project hosted by our
Mitchell County Extension Services. Each school year our fifth grades students participate,
and this year we were excited to learn that ten students won first place in their category. The
project requires each student to select a topic from the Georgia Career Clusters in which they
had to research and write an informational paper. The students selected from a wide range of
topics such as Health Science, Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources. Here at North
Mitchell County Elementary School, we would like to acknowledge ten of our students for
being recognized for outstanding achievement on their DPA project. Congratulations to
Demarion Bell, Eliza Bright, Jimmy Walker, Shaunneise Haynes, Kellie Feaster, Janijah
Sanders, Franky Lopez, Amyah Frazier, Anetria Jess, and Joshua Drake.
Unity Day at SMCES On October 9, 2013, the students in grades Pre-K
through 5th at South Mitchell participated in Unity Day.
In connection with a national month-long effort, this day
was set aside to show support in bullying prevention by
wearing the color orange. The students learned in
Health and PE how to be a buddy and not a bully and
eagerly waited for Unity Day so they could show their support and do their part to
put an end to bullying. Strategies for Multiplication
To introduce multiplication to students, Mrs. Etheridge
had her students complete a project showing repeated
addition, groups of, commutative property, and arrays.
MCMS Patriot’s Pen Contest By: Ms. G. Bryant
The 8th grade students are focusing their attention on winning an essay contest. In conjunction
with the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars), students will enter the Patriot’s Pen contest
focusing on the theme What Patriotism Means to Me. Students are excited about
participating in the youth essay competition
which gives them the opportunity to express
their views on democracy. If students are
chosen locally, they will win a plaque and
$500 for 1st place, $200 for 2nd place, and
$100 for 3rd place. The state winner will be honored at the awards banquet at the mid-winter
meeting in Macon, Georgia on Saturday, February 15, 2014. If the student wins 1st place
nationally, they will win an all expense paid trip to Washington, DC and $5,000.
Program Shadow Day Mrs. S. Anglin's Junior Healthcare students attended a Program Shadow Day At Southwest Georgia Technical
College on Tuesday, October 22. They were given the
opportunity to shadow the Allied Health Programs which
included Nursing, Radiology Tech, Respiratory Tech,
Medical Assisting, Clinical Laboratory Tech, Pharmacy

FCCLA Attend Fall Leadership Conference By: Elantra Clark, FFA
On Thursday, September 19, four FCCLA members and adviser, Mrs. Crosby, traveled to the Fall
Leadership Conference in Covington, GA. Once the members arrived, they checked into their cabins
and began the 2013 “It’s Outta the Park” conference. The conference began by gathering all the
FCCLA members for the Opening Ceremony where Kent Julian spoke about E + R = O. Mr. Julian’s
speech about E+R=O means the events in your life plus the response to your action gives you the
outcome of your life. Once the Opening Ceremony was adjourned, the members had the option of
playing basketball, tennis or putt putt as well as participating in
karaoke and a Foundation Dance. While attending the
conference, FCCLA members were able to interact with other
members from around the state of Georgia in addition to
attending leadership sessions. In the leadership sessions, FCCLA
State Officers taught members ways to improve their
organization and gave ideas on how to become more active
members. Above Left: Sakesha Drakes, Mrs. Crosby, Heather

Making Scarecrow Glyphs On October 18, Mrs. Paxton Crosby’s Junior and Senior Early Childhood Education students
completed Scarecrow Glyphs in celebration of the fall season. Glyph activities are incorporated
into Early Childhood Education classrooms to enhance the skill of data interpretation. Students
were asked to color certain items on their scarecrow to symbolize their eye color, whether or not
they have siblings, favorite season, color and meal, etc. Once scarecrows were completed, the
students were able to interpret the data of their classmates just by viewing the colors of each
scarecrow.

What’s Cooking in NMCES’ Pre-k Class? Pumpkins! Students in Mrs. Grimes’ Pre K class have been learning all about Pumpkins! First we discussed how they
grow and ways we can use them. Then after reading Too Many Pumpkins by Linda White, we discussed all
the ways we could cook pumpkins. We chose to cook pumpkins pancakes. The students helped gather and
mix the ingredients. Then they watched Mrs. Sheppard cook them on the griddle. Their favorite part was
eating them! The students loved Pumpkin Pancakes. To conclude our unit
on pumpkins, Pre K joined the kindergarten classes on a trip to Mark’s
Melon Patch. They were excited to see a real pumpkin patch. They
discussed the vines and yellow flowers. They compared the shapes and sizes
of all the pumpkins. They even got to see the “ghost pumpkins!”

AFJROTC Leadership Lab By: Cadet Xavier Aytch
On October 1, 2013, AFJROTC conducted its first Leadership Lab
of the 2013-2014 school term. The main factor of this lead lab and
all following lead labs is that these labs are CADET RUN.
Everything from planning to conducting it was done by the GA-946
group staff and led by Cadet Neal Aldavera. Every member of the
AFJROTC corps was present. Freshmen and sophomores all rotated
out between three main stations: flag raising/flag lowering-where
cadets learned how to correctly raise and lower the U.S. flag and all
the procedures that come with it; flag folding-where cadets learned
the proper way to fold a flag after being lowered; and an Honor
Guard station-where cadets were taught the procedures of a color
guard, all of which were instructed by group staff members. Sophomore cadets were also provided advanced drill
techniques by TSgt. Dennis Seymour from Moody Air Force Base. TSgt. Seymour volunteered his time to help cadets learn how to command
drill. All of the cadet instructors were evaluated by Cadet Zakia Toombs, Cadet Neal Aldavera, and Cadet Xavier Aytch. The first lead lab of
the year was a huge success, and the next one be held on December 10, 2013.

NMCES Muffins with Moms: “Parents Got Talent” Parental involvement is very important when it comes to educating the whole child. On October 22, we invited our moms out to visit the
classroom and enjoy muffins and juice with their children. Visiting the classroom gives the parents a firsthand experience with what is being
taught in the classroom. After visiting the classroom, the moms and their children came into the cafeteria for muffins, juice and information to
help make their children successful. In reference to the television show “America’s Got Talent,” we talked
with the moms about the different talents/hobbies they possess that can be shared within the school.
The moms completed a form telling about their talents/hobbies, and the
school is going to connect those talents/hobbies with standards taught
within the school. Then, the moms can come and share their talent/
hobby with classes so the children can see how what is taught in the
classroom is used in the real world.
Showing UNITY
at NMCES Bullying (physically, mentally and through social
media) is occurring more and more in today’s
schools and communities. We have been discussing
bullying prevention strategies at NMCES for the
month of October. Some things we have discussed
include setting goals, standing up against bullying
and treating everyone with respect. Setting goals will keep their minds occupied on
something positive. When setting goals, they have to make a plan and put that plan in action to reach either a long-term or short-term goal.
They have learned to stop bullying by standing tall, telling the bully to stop, and then walking away. And of course, there is always the Golden
Rule: “Treat others the way you want to be treated.” On October 9, we wore orange to show our support to help stop bullying in our school and
community. We plan to make this an annual activity.
MCHS College Fair A College Fair was held at the MCHS Gym on
September 30. There were 16 colleges and
universities in attendance as well as Military
Recruiters on hand to answer questions and
provide information to interested students.
Area high schools were invited and Baconton
Community Charter School brought their
Seniors to take part in the event.

MCMS Top Readers By: Ms. P. Taylor, Media Specialist
Although we got off to a late start with AR this year, these students are well on their way to reading 1 million words or
more. Wendy Escalante, Clora Kelson, Marlene Mendez, Nohemi Perez, Lorenzo Riggins, Montserrat Santillan, John
Stewart, and Edgerin Williams have read 250,000 words or more! These students will be rewarded with a pizza luncheon
and a chance to win one of two $10 Wal-Mart gift cards to be given away. Danarick Slaughter (left) is our top reader
right now with 843,142 words! Students who meet their individual reading goals for the 2nd nine weeks will be rewarded
with a trip to the movies. We would love to take everyone, so please encourage your child to read at least 20 minutes
each night to meet his or her reading goals.
The Value of a Newspaper By: Jerona Waiters
The value of a newspaper is the information that it carries. Students and teachers at
Mitchell County Middle School utilize the Albany Herald Newspaper as an instructional
and learning tool weekly. The use of the newspaper allows students to be exposed to
more non-fiction text. The newspaper is valuable to students because students are able to
analyze a variety of writing styles, increase their vocabulary, and practice other skills that
have been taught in the classroom. The ultimate goal is to get students to read not only in
the classroom but outside of the classroom as well. This also encourages parental
involvement in the learning process. To incorporate the use of the newspaper across the
curriculum and into the classrooms, students are given the choice to select their own articles and occasionally students are assigned articles.
Students also read the articles for homework; they write and submit objective summaries the following day. Since using the newspapers,
students have begun reporting current events that happen not just locally but also around the world. This has also encouraged students to watch
the news.
Parents Information Session for the

SMCES RED RIBBON
RALLY 2013 Students at South Mitchell County Elementary
School showed their “Drug Free” Spirit with cheers,
chants, “Kallie” the Drug Dog, inspirational testimonies, skits, songs and a special visit from the
Mitchell County Middle School’s Cheerleaders.
South Mitchell’s student body began the rally with a visit from the EAGLE mascot, our very own Tahj Johnson. The faculty,
staff and student body were very intrigued with the inspirational
testimonies of two young men, Mr. Antonio Bryant (Albany, GA) and Mr. Willie James Mills (Camilla, GA). These men were once
users and dealers who lived to tell their story about the importance of saying “NO” to DRUGS.
Mr. Bryant and his guide dog “Josie” let students know that he was not always blind, but helped students understand the importance of saying “NO!” Mr. Mills also gave encouraging words to
students about staying focused in school and not letting others persuade them to do drugs. “Kallie”
the Drug Dog was seemed very “magical” to students because she was able to find drugs that were hid in secret places. A skit by the “Temples” was written by our very own Teacher of the Year,
Mrs. Keisha Williams. The skit gave some very powerful illusions of staying away from those
things that would overpower our “Temple” (our body) and make us become unaware of our surroundings. The South Mitchell County Elementary School’s faculty, staff, and student body truly appreciated the information received. The program was very inspiring and
most importantly, students learned the importance of living a “DRUG FREE” life and knowing that it’s okay to “SAY NO!!!”
The 1983 Mitchell-Baker High School State Champion Football Team was recognized on October 19, 2013 during the
MCHS homecoming game. Everyone had an opportunity to see former classmates and talk about old times.
