The office Christmas party is a great opportunity to catch
up with people you haven't seen for twenty minutes.
- Julius Sharpe
Everyone knows Christmas is about sharing love and kindness, being with family, tearing open presents, eating enormous amounts of food, drinking lots of champagne and having at least a few days holiday. But its also a very humorous time of year. Christmas just wouldnt be the same without those corny Christmas cracker jokes and then there are the hilarious presents that are re-gifted from the previous year, or the quirky ones no-one is quite sure about that have been sent from a great aunt. To get the laughter, or the eye-rolling and sighs, started around your Christmas table I have searched far and wide for the worlds best ever cracker jokes:What did Adam say to his wife on the day before Christmas? It's Christmas, Eve!What do angry mice send to each other at Christmas? Cross Mouse Cards! What do you call a bunch of chess players bragging about their games in a hotel lobby? Chess nuts boasting in an open foyer! Why did no one bid for Rudolph and Blitzen on eBay? Because they were two deer! How did Mary and Joseph know that Jesus was 7lb 6oz when he was born? They had a weigh in a manger! Why is it getting harder to buy Advent calendars? Because their days are numbered!I was looking out of the window this morning and said to my wife "It looks like rain dear." What do you call a blind reindeer? I have no eye deerHow come you never hear anything about the 10th reindeer "Olive? Olive?Yeah, you know, "Olive the other reindeer, used to laugh and call him names."And after everyones tired of the one-liners. Another Christmas game, which may just take o this year, is checking warning labels. Herere a few from last Christmas:Warning label on a letter opener that says: 'Caution: Safety goggles recommended.'A cartridge for a laser printer warns: 'Do not eat toner.' A warning on an electric drill made for carpenters cautions: 'This product not intended for use as a dental drill.' On a child's buggy: 'Remove child before folding.'This product is not to be used in bathrooms. On a bathroom heater.Christmas Lights Warning: For indoor or outdoor use only. Do not place this product into any electronic equipment. On a case of chocolate CDs in a Christmas gift basket. Warning: Do not climb inside this bag and zip it up. Doing so will cause injury and death. On a label inside a protective bag containing fragile Christmas presents which measured 15cm by 15cm by 12cm. With these safety messages provided and our social responsibility fullled, the team here at Metropol wish you a safe, happy and fun-lled Christmas and a healthy, productive and prosperous New Year!

In an era where so much is copied, imitated and re-invented you can be forgiven for thinking theres not much new under the sun when it comes to fashion and design. The world loves original and if youve come across Courtney Jamiesons MaramaJewellery you will, no doubt, have been quite refreshed by her designs which aremade from 50% recycled silver and New Zealand sourced stones. Courtney has takenjade/pounamu which has traditionally been presented in a very classic way in NewZealand and designed it in a rustic meets modern way with unique tribal nuances.Courtney exhibited at this years New Zealand Fashion Week and her stand was votedWinner of the Peoples Choice Best Stand Award 2015.Courtney works from her studio in Christchurch and sells via the two HAPA storeshere and from her online shop www.maramajewellery.co.nz.
JAMIESONWhat led you into the world of jewellery design?
It wasnt something that I knew I wanted to do as a child I have always been hands-on though and enjoyed designing and making anything from shoelaces to t-shirt prints.I moved to Wellington at 17 and ended up doing a graphic design course at WelTec, with that I got a random part time job at a bead store down the road. That was the beginning for me. I fell in love with making jewellery! Putting beads on a string and bending wire just wasnt enough anymore, I wanted to make the real deal stu so I quit design school and sought out somewhere to learn silversmithing and I have never looked backed since! Where did you learn your craft?
I learnt jewellery making and design in Wellington at The Learning Connexion its a great school for hands-on people. We spent 100% of our time in the studio working. After two years there I went on an adventure to the South Island to discover a bit more about stone carving as I wanted to incorporate my own cut stones into my jewellery.I intended to stay in Greymouth for three weeks, but ended up there for over a year. I met wonderful people (including my partner) and learnt a lot about stone.
Your jewellery designs are unique where do you get your inspiration
from?
Inspiration is a funny thing, it comes from anywhere and anything. Sometimes I am obsessed with a shape, as you may be able to tell triangles play a large part in my work. I like to be able to work the stone into a shape you don't see generally made into jewellery. And at the moment, I am nding inspiration from the shapes and designs on Aztec rugs. So really anything that catches my eye is inspiration!
How would you describe your style?
I think my style is rather unique, using a material (such as pounamu) which has always been used in a traditional way and testing boundaries by modernising it was a bit risky. But it worked. It has quite a bold look to it and denitely stands out because of its uniqueness.
What was involved in exhibiting at NZ Fashion Week?
Ahhh Fashion Week, that was one busy, crazy week thats for sure. Involved were: meetings with the NZFW crew to organise our exhibition, designing and preparing the collection to be shown, designing a stand out display, meeting potential clients and buyers, drinking wine and watching runway shows! As I won best stand award I have been invited back next year, so I'm looking forward to another crazy week full of fashion, food and wine.

OUT & ABOUT
What type of metals and stones do you like to work with and
why?
I work with mainly silver, its a lovely material to work with and I recycle my own silver to create a mix of recycled and new silver to make around 50% recycled silver in my jewellery. Sustainability is a big thing for me so my aim is to be working with the closest I can get to 100% recycled metals. And the same goes with stones, ethics and sustainability play a large role in what a want my brand and work to be. So slowly I make changes to get that little bit closer to my goal. NZ stones just make sense to me.
How has your work evolved since you began?
It has evolved in a way where I have found my distinctive style. You can tell a person is wearing a Marama piece by just looking at it. I love that. It has taken me a while to get to this point, trying new things and dierent ways of working.
Has the role of a silversmith evolved with technology or is it
still, essentially, an age-old craft?
Essentially, its still an age old craft, to me anyway. A few things have changed, but I still bash with a hammer, use a ame torch to solder and sand or polish by hand (mostly) - that is the art of handmade! You can get things manufactured in factories or made with machinery or even 3D printed. But I think the age old hands-on approach is always going to have more meaning to it.
On a more personal note do you have hobbies or sports you
enjoy?
Is gardening a sport? I also hula hoop and dabble in a bit of yoga.
What is your favourite drink?
A good gin + tonic with a dash of homemade elderower cordial!
What is one thing that Metropol readers would be surprised
to know about you?
UmmmI have 10 tattoos. I have a rabbit named Dave. I recently went vegan for a month. I am addicted to avocados!
Whats next on the wish list?
I have a rather large wish list but Ill go with new tools for the studio, a girl can never have enough tools!
I like to be able to
work the stone into a
shape you don't see
generally made into
jewellery. And at the
moment, I am finding
inspiration from the
shapes and designs on
Aztec rugs. So really
anything that catches
my eye is inspiration!

In hoop classes they teach the
techniques of hooping, with 28

that combine great general body
toning with cardio fitness.
H PS of funThere is no can't when it comes to hula hooping.
There are just those who can't hoop yet, says Bernadette, Director and instructor at In2Hula. We can get most into the swing of it.
The basics of hula hooping are that it is great fun the chance to reminisce on childhood skills or to learn new ones, and get t at the same time.
In2Hula is a tness regime in its own right, manufacturing and supplying hoops all over the country with Bernadette, and her team of four trained instructors, taking a range of tness classes across Christchurch.
I loved it right from the start, says Bernadette, who learnt how to hoop at the age of 47. I love bringing the joy of hooping to people.
In hoop classes they teach the techniques of hooping, with 28 moves both on and o the body that combine great general body toning with cardio tness and some fun moves, with a training video now available online.
As well as tness classes, In2Hula oers school and preschool programmes and is great fun for workplace team building and even as a conference ice breaker.
In an eort to share the joy of hooping, Bernadette arranged for 110 hoops, donated by generous people and with free shipping donated by SB Global Logistics, to be gifted to children in Nepal.
Bernadette will also be on the road early next year in their Hoop'Inn caravan, holding workshops and spreading the hooping word, and looking for anyone interested in joining the fun as an In2Hula licensee.

Te Hpua: Halswell Centre includes a library with varied spaces, about 5,000 square metres of outdoor area with a swimming pool, several large meeting rooms, inclusive community spaces and a Customer Service desk.
The name Halswell Centre came from a community naming competition. Council sta also worked alongside Mahaanui Kurataiao to consult with Ngi Te Ruahikihiki and Ngi Thuriri to arrive at the Mori name; Te Hpua. This gives reference to pools of water, and a subtle reference to Waihora (Lake Ellesmere), often referred to as a 'Hpua' or coastal lagoon.
Facilities and Infrastructure Director
Distinctive new centre for HalswellA distinctive new library and community facility has opened in the fast-growing Halswell community.
David Adamson says it is exciting to see such a large new facility open in a fast-growing community.
"This is the rst time Christchurch City Council has oered so many services under the one roof and it's a pretty large roof at that."
At just over 3000 square metres, the building is twice the size of Upper Riccarton Community and School Library. The centre's striking design features
sloping walls and roofs with rain gardens slotted into the exterior walls, surrounded by glass and lush vegetation. Water from the roof irrigates these plants, while autumn will see 124 new trees planted.
Planning for the centre began in 2009, with $23.1 million earmarked for its development. Even before the post-quake population increase, the Council identied a population boom and community need in Halswell.

Explore the historic military sites on Godley Head. From the Taylors Mistake car park pick up the Godley Head Walkway. The track skirts Harris Bay and continues past the top end of a white-ippered penguin colony. At Boulder Bay it is worthwhile detouring down to the baches that line the rocky beach. ON THE PLAINS
Riccarton Bush Walk
Riccarton Bush is the only area of podocarp forest remaining in Christchurch. Distance: 2kmDescription:This is a good walk for a hot day as it winds through the shade of Riccarton Bush. Starting at Riccarton house walk around towards Deans Cottage. Follow the stone path and walk through the wooden gate that
marks the beginning of the nature walk. There are plenty of seats located along the track and birdsong echoes through the bush from both native and introduced birds such as the fantail (piwakawaka), silvereye (tauhou) and grey warbler (riroriro). Riccarton Bush is the main centre of Christchurch's small resident population of wood pigeons (kereru).
Pegasus track
This walk explores the dune landscape of North Shore. The track follows the crest of the dune with impressive views. No roads to cross and an excellent children's playground at Broad Park.Distance: 2kmDescription:From the car park in Larnach Street follow the wide gravelled track as it weaves through the dunes crossing several access tracks to the beach and into North Shore suburb. After ten minutes a well-made track climbs up onto the crest of the dunes with ne views of the shoreline.
This track leads back down to the main dune track, crosses one four way junction then shortly afterwards reaches another four way junction. Mountain bikers can often be seen here emerging from Bottle Lake forest and following the dune track north. An option for the return trip is to turn right at this junction and cross to the beach and amble back to the Waimairi Surf Life Saving clubhouse which is a prominent landmark. A track leads from the surf club through to a carpark and past toilets and children's playground into Broad Park again.

Spicy twist on old fashioned favouriteRecipe from the new cook book: Carbs by numbers low carb recipe options Christmas by Sandra Dunbar and Meg Pell.www.carbsbynumbers.com
Devilled eggs with red chilli and black sesame seeds 0g carbsA new take on a classic old time favourite and very lling. This will make 8 portions, we have allowed two halves per serve. Ingredients:
4 eggs 4 tablespoons parmesan cheese, grated 1 tablespoon sour cream 1 teaspoon red chilli 1 teaspoon black sesame seeds a pinch salt a pinch white pepper Method:
Preheat the oven to 180CHard boil the eggs, refresh under cold water, then remove the shell and allow to cool.Using a tablespoon at a time, place four evenly spaced mounds of nely grated parmesan cheese on a baking paper lined tray.Pat them down lightly and sprinkle with the black sesame seeds.Bake in the oven for just a few minutes until melted and golden.Remove from the oven, cool and quarter each disc.Halve the eggs lengthways and remove the yolks.Finely chop the red chilli. In a small bowl mash the eggs, then add the sour cream, chilli, salt and pepper.Mound the mixture back into the shells of the whites and stud with two of the parmesan shards.

Kelvin from Cheeky Sparrow at The Colombo, 363 Colombo Street, and I share the same values. He and the team have thought through the science of food and given it a touch of art.
Great friendly sta have made The Cheeky Sparrow a successful business by providing fantastic food at a good price with a smile. The sunny outdoor area which is protected from the wind is a great place to meet friends on a warm summer day and you know the coee is good, right?

A CHEEKY PLACE TO MEET
By Nicholas Henare
I have three rules for cafs and restaurants: good atmosphere, good food and good price.
The sunny outdoor area is a great
place to meet friends and you
know the coffee is good, right?
made on site, Kelvin and the team get it right from the beginning. From the focus on the simplest cheese roll (soft cheese rolled with just the right type of bread and toasted till golden brown), all the way through to their wide range of cabinet food which just screams quality. The Cheeky Sparrow also has a great range of gluten-free products too. Its a great stop when visiting the Colombo for a spot of shopping on the go. They have great customers because they have great service
and fantastic food. Why dont you join that group of great customers and like a cheeky sparrow, y into The Colombo at 363 Colombo Street and try something that will leave you with a cheeky grin. Enjoy.
